About Rescue Gra„’:.
Question.—P lease give mo all the in¬
formation you eaa iu regal d to rescue
grass?
Answer.—R escue grass is probably
the finest grass for winter grazing, and
the most prolific grass of southern lati¬
tudes. The grass requires a rich loamy
soil, and comes uo iu Seutember. ", grow
during the the ., coldest .
lng rapidly even
winter. It affords a rich pasturage of
the most succulent stems and leaves
from Dec. 1, to May 1, or it may be !
mowed for hay two or three times dur¬
ing April and May, and then allowed to
mature a crop of seed, which in gather¬
ing will shatter, or leavo enough seed
on the groudd to reseed the laud, so
that one sowing, if properly treated,
wiil suffice. After mowing two or throe
times, from 109 to 150 bu-heis of seed
may be made on an acre. The seed may j
be sown from June to February,
There aro some peculiarities about j
this grass, seed. They wiil not germi¬
nate in summer. The colder the woaiher
in winter, the faster it grows, unless
the stems have commenced jointing,
when a freeze will kill it down, only to
come out again, however, greatly in¬
creased in thickness. When not mowed,
the grass grows slowly, but when it, is
mowed or gi-.utnl upon, the growth is
hastened. The plats upon which the
grass lias been sown can be broken up
from Jane 1 to 15. fertilized and sown
in peas, or planted in corn and field
beans. By this method the grass wiil
not only be improved, bnt splendid crops
of pea vine hav, or of ecru ana beans can
be made The seed that aro left on the
ground in May will lie dormant until
the cool nights in September.
The seoti are quoted by seed men at
25 cents pot- pound, but about 103
pounds may be obtained from Dr. A.
JI. Winn & Son of Lawreucovillo, Ga.,
at 15 cents per pound, or 12 cents
pound if as much as 10 pounds aro
bought; also 150 pounds can be obtained
from Mr. J, T. Baxter of Snwauee, Ga.,
at the same price. ^ The foregoing iu
formation is tarnished largely , by Mr.
J. T. Baxter, who has successfully
