A notable feature of Admiral
Deweys arrival in Washington
will bo Lite presentation to him
by the president of the superb
sword made by authority
of congress its a testimonial
from the government. The sword
was completed some time since
hut owing to its delicacy and
great value it was deemed best
not to solid it to the admiral.
It is now in a safe deposit
vault avai.ing his coming.
The presentation to (he officers
and men of the admirals flag ship

Ten tinys ago three colored op¬

cut by “vvliittuaps and ordered
the negroes in general to leave.
This baa caused much indignation
among the buttor class of people.
The suporintondant and others of
the Kincaid mills have also been
ordered to vacate, or theywonld bo

N. L- W. COMMENCEMENT.
The commencement exercises
closed last night with 11 play by
homo talent. “A Fishermans Luck”
The commencement surmon Sun¬
day by Rev. Bnseom Anthony was
eloquent scholarly und well deliv¬
ered. His special remarks to the
young people were touching and
beautiful. The solo by Mins Eley
was well rendered. Miss Turner
of Tennille sang a solo at night by
special request in a sweet and pa¬
thetic manner.
Too much can not be said of the
faculty and pupils, their efforts
have been well crowned. The
young mens Lyceum on Monday
was entertaining nil the way
through. Tho divorce suit of Nan¬
cy and Henry Larkin made quite
a hit. It was arranged by our gon¬
ial Prof. Walker.
On Monday night the primary
entertainment was unusually good.
Little Rocnn Daley’s recitation de¬
serving specinl mention, and little
Pearl Page captivated the whole
prduuce. Nona Acree and Lillian
Daley co ne in for a share of holier
in fact all taking part were good,
showing talent in their respective
places.
Tuesday morning was spent
with Longfellow by the Alpha
Delta Society. The audience was
highly entertained and each one
taking part left a favorable im¬
pression on their hearers. Miss
Louella Norris and May Anthony
doing cspeciall well. Tuesday was
devoted to music expression, recital
in wbico was shown some good
muternl in this line, they all aequit
ed themselves in a creditable man
iter and the evening will long be
remembered by those that present
Mr.Joe Malpas was encored on n
solo “Old Companion”. Joe has
a remarkable voice, and the ladder
of fame is just a little in advance
of him. The people have been en
tertained and those desiring a good
school to send their children too,
could not find a more better place
than the N, L. W.

A COMRADES TRIP.
The party of eighteen old con¬
federates and young Americans for
the reunion at Charleston, S. Q’.
left on the night of May 8th, got
to our destination on Tuesday 10

Palm Beach seven and a half miles
some strolled on the bench picking
up shells, some bathing in the old
ocean to our delight stayed there

Sumter. The old Fort that stood
the storm of shot and shell during
the civil war and fell not for it is
founded on a rock foundation one
of the strongest forts on the south¬

said was forty foot long, four feet
thick at hut end. carries a hall
