HOUSE HOLD JlFFAIRS.
Hint* For the Pantry.
{Then space is a desideratum In &
pantry, a groove should be made at
the back at one of the lower shelves
so that the platters cau staud up.
Hooks screwed into the bottom of the
shelf above where the cups and sau¬
cers are to be kept will permit the
hanging of all cups that have handles.
When Netting Out Plants.
An important point in setting out
plants is to firm the soil well about
the plant after setting it in the
ground. This can be best done with
the feet, tamping the soil gently im¬
mediately about the base and against
the stalk of the plant. This serves to
keep the plant in position, so that it
will not he whipped about by the
wind, and prevents the air from get¬
ting at the roots. As the plants are
knocked out of the pots dip the ball
of soil surrounding the roots in water,
and pour a little into the hole into
which the plant is to be set. Fill the
soil in ubont the plant, and compress
it as suggested above, and if no water
is applied for a week the plant will
not sufl'ei? By the former method
only the surface of the soil is wet,
and the roots of the plant remain dry.

This is the time to put away heavy
furs and woolens, for the moths arc
already beginning to fly. If furs and
clothing are put away with moth eggs
in them, all the odors in the world
will not save them, us any furrier will
tell yon. The time when the eggs are
laid is when the warm days first ap¬
pear and the heavy garment is hung
in the closet, but not put away for
fear it may be neoiled again. Then
perhaps it is worn ooce or twice and
hung up agaiu, and in the hurry ol
the season’s cleaning forgotten until
moths are noticed. Then the furs nre
taken out hastily, perhaps brushed a
little, aud put away smothered in
camphor or something else as useless
and expensive. In the fall when the
clothes are taken out there is a wail¬
ing and nobody can understand how
it happened when the clothes were
put away so carefully aud such a lot
of moth stuffTiseri!
The proper way is to lay the heavy
clothing in a chest as soon as it is not
in daily use, but so that it can be
taken put and worn when cold days
come. Every article should be taken
out and hung on tlio olotheslino on a
clear day; if there is any wind, so
much the better, as the dust will blow
away. After beating with a light
switch of some kind brush the clothes
carefully. Never put clothes away
with soiled spots on them. .Scour
them all out. When all the clothes
are beaten thoroughly and brushednnd
cleaned, fold each article separately,
and with care us to the fpldiug. Then
see that the chests are absolutely
tight, that there are no cracks iu them
anywhere. • If there are, paste news¬
paper over the cracks aud see tbut
there is not even the smallest crevice
for the moth to enter, for if there is
one she will surely find it. Wrap up
each article separately, either in old
sheets or in old towels or in papers;
see that all are absolutely clean. Pack
them in with care, so that they will not
be crushed or wrinkled, and spread a
sheet over the top and tuck it in closely
all over the things. Close the chests,
and, if there will be no need to open
it during the warm season, paste paper
over the edges of the cover. But if
it closes tightly there will be no dan¬
ger from moths. That is the whole
secret of keeping woolens safe from
moths.

“No, Hir,” the boys answered.

! Our Bridge Builders In Africa.
Between Khartoum and Alexandria
| the Nile flows for 1,800 miles, And in
! all that distance It receives ofily one
tributary, the Atbara, which comes
from the Abyssinian highlands. In
building the railroad from the Lower
Nile to Khartoum, hundreds of miles
along the right bank of the river, It is
necessary therefore to erect only one
bridge. This bridge will be an iron
and steel structure over a quarter of a
mile in length, and a Pennsylvania
firm of bridge-builders are now turning
out the material, which will be shipped
to Egypt and transported up the Nile
to the banks of the Atbara. The force
of Philadelphia artisans who will erect
the bridge have sailed for Egypt, and
hope to have the foundations ready for
the superstructure by the time it ar
rives.
The British Government is having
this bridge built in America because
there is pressing need for it to obviate
considerable delay in the completion
of the railroad, and we can turn it out
more quickly than British builders
would agree to do. The prodigious
work of developing Africa will require
many bridges and a great deal of ma¬
chinery, and our builders and manu¬
facturers are perfectly able to com¬
pete successfully with the rest of the
world for the supply of many of these
products.—New York Sun.
