To the Editor of the Macon Telegraph:
Hiving won tho first prize for the
largest vie d of wheat on 1 aero, also
on 4 acres of hind in Midd'e Georgia,
I have received many r quests lor in or
mat ion in regard to my method of prep¬
aration, culture, oio., 1 iisft specs m
your columns to g’ ve the re ad of sev¬
eral year* successful wheat growiu»,
hoping thereby to preseut tj veur m ur
readers some ideas that will be of b lie
fit to them. I wnl write of tb s sub¬
ject by answering the pram leal ques¬
tions that are usually asked me.
Question — When is ihe best time to
sow wheai?
Answer Jnsi after £r.t fret-z. or
killing frost in November.
UIO bu uestrucuvo to wnear are ao
stroyed. To sow in October wheat
would be more liable to get killed in
early spring. As to the kind of land 1
suggest that you sow your best upland.
Nearly all wheat growers are partial to
red land, but 1 must say that two of the
poorest yields I ever had were on red
land. Tell me what your season will
he next April aud May and I can tail
you the kiud of soil that will give tho
best result.
My wheat land is not specially pro
pared for sowing. I sow wheat after
cotton that has been well cultivated. If
the stalk* are large I usually drag some
thing over them, after whioh I plow
them up with a scooter plow and let
them remam where they are.
Q- What is the best rnauure, and
how do you use it ?
A.—I use all manures broadcast
Nothing better than stable manure.
Cow manure, when obtained Cram got
touseed meal and hulls, equals anything
yop can use. Cottonseed are fine for a
rainy season, and will not leach like
other manures. As to commercial fer
tilUera, 1 know nothing of them. But
yen caa always rely ou acid phosphate
ami cotrousueii iii 'jl, mixed two of acid
to one of meal. Though dryer the sea
ecu the better the resnic. Too much

time of germinal ion.
Q. —What vaiiety of wheat do you
sow ?
A.—It is purple straw.
Q-—How do you treat your seed
wheat*
A —I shake all of the small grains
possible out of the wheat by passing
through a fan over a 3 10 inch sieve at
about 30 degrees incline. If yon cannot
secure your seed in that way go to some
place in your Hold where von have onlv
ordinary wheat, and there cut of? enpngh

you have done this tuu should apply
slack lime ju>t as much as will adhere
to each grain. Yon will find tins to be
very profitable. The wheat will grow a
little taller and will.stand a much b truer

so as to givo tiie Imlo plant all tbo

Q —How much wiuat must rce sow
por ac;6 in order to got tliu best results?
A.-If yon select your seed wheat as
?ou do yhur corn. I say sow nothing less
than ouo bushel per acre. Ail acre of
i au j that will require two buahals to ba
well seedel can bo sown with one
bunhel, and the yield will bo noarly as
gooa, bur, not near bo satisfactory,
Why ? Because when it is thinly sown
the plant will spread, it shoots up irreg
uhtrly, is not uniform in growth, does
not ripen evenly, has a coarse straw,
and the only good thing that can besaid
about it is that it has a good head.
Q—How do you plow iu your grain,
aud how deep?
A.—I turn under with a common turn
plow and I suppose tlio seed could ba
found on an average of from # to 4
inches under the top of the sojl. 1 level
the ground with a harrow, brush or
anything that will put tho ground in
good shape for the harvesting machine
Wo have now six mouths to rest from
seed tima till harvest,
Q —At what time do you cut your
wheat?
A.—When you see the heads begin to
turn down you enu get your machine
ready for harvest
Q. — Why not rot oil the green order
so ns to have batter straw?
A.—By so doing you open up a chan*
nel tor mold and rust iu your next crop.
Give the little wheat germ ad that na
ture calls for, audit will be more able to
ward of? the much dreaded diseases.
Now, „ if we oan trust our Wheat in .
the hands of nature let’s uo our fields
likewise. Nature says to man, ditch

You can safely use 100 pounds of acid

mentioned.
Q._Will it pay to raise wheat?

barnyard manure, $52.60; harvesting,
$ 10 ; threshing, $ 86 ; total expense. $180;
leaving $426 profit and 11 months to
play aud ono to work. If I had only
raised one-seventh of what I did I would
have had more profit than if I bad raised
one bale of cotton per acre at 5 cents
