In 1901, M. W. Gross founded the McDuffie Progress as an independent weekly paper published on Thursdays. A subscription for the McDuffie Progress was a dollar; the same price as its Democratic competitor, the McDuffie Journal. The McDuffie Progress still publishes today as McDuffie County's paper of record.
