F. F. A. Study Helps
In College Work
,By WEYMAN RQOKS
who is now a student attending
Abraham Raidwin Agricultural
College at Tifton. In 1937-38 he
was Secretary of the Elmodel
FFA Chapter.
By studying vocational agriculture
two years at Elmodel, I have found
that the course has been very helpful
in my work at college.
I am interested in the study of
agriculture, because it is a study of
the problems and the solutions to
these problems that are facing the
farmers of today and tomorrow.
I have studied jobs for my class
room work in agriculture and applied
these jobs on my projects. In my
two years of high school agriculture,
I had forestry for one of my pro
jects. I had various livestock and
crops for my other projects.
I am very much interested in the
study of Forestry. There is $20,-
000,000 lost annually by the farmers
of Georgia because of forest fires.
Maybe, through the combined efforts
of Agricultural teachers, county ag
ents, and forestry professors the com
ing generation will know better how
to conserve their forests.
Terracing is another job that I
studied in high school which needs
to be practiced more in this county.
You conserve and increase the value
of your land greatly by having it
properly terraced.
The course now taught- at Elmodel
in vocational agriculture closely re
sembles the work I am doing in col
lege. Only in high school work you
are able to apply your information to
your projects while in college you
don’t have any projects.
Farmers of today had just as well
make up their minds to farm on a
more scientific basis, a large per
centage of the farmers will not take
heed to diversified farming and any
better way of farming.
Elmodel FFA chapter has grown
rapidly since it was organized, espe
' cially since Mr. Cheek has been there.
! He and his students have won many
। prizes and ribbons at the Albany Fat
; Cattle Show both last year and this
i year. I wish to say that I am proud
of this.
Boys of Elmodel chapter, you had
better get your subject thoroughly
while going over it. It will be help-
Iful to all of you, even if you don’t
go to college. I hope each of you will
• interpret the meaning of agriculture
I and put it to use. Conserve and build
the soil above everything.

The Georgia State College at Ath

determining what breed you are go
ing to raise, you should decide
whether or not you are going to buy
your baby chicks or hatch them your
self. If you decide upon buying eggs,
you should select large eggs weigh
ing at least 3 ozs. each. Special at
tention should be given to the hatch
ing of eggs. First, keep them in a
cool place; second keep the eggs clean;
third, do not keep the eggs over 21
days. Usually it takes eggs from
19-21 days to hatch. If you hatch
your eggs in an incubator, you should
keep the incubator in a cool place.
The correct temperature for hatching
the eggs is 103 degrees.
In buying baby chicks, select pul
lorum tested of a good fast growing
breed. You should buy your chicks
in the early Fall and in February and
March. Keep your chicks in sanitary
quarters so as to prevent diseases.
Unsanitary practices and improper
feeding are the most common causes
of chick ailments. A concrete or wood

In the fall of 1937 1 entered the
Senior High School at Elmodel. I
chose Vocational Agriculture as one
of my subjects. Mr. C. A. Nix taught
it. The first few months we took
notes. We also studied winter cover
crops. After Christmas we studied
and also terraced land. We later be
gan to discuss our projects. 1 planted
IM acres of cotton, 1% acres of pea
nuts and 1 acre of corn.
I I broke my cotton land the last of
January and planted my cotton in
March. 1 used IM bushels of Mat
thew Toole seeds. I planter it with
a Covington dropper. My rows were
3 feet apart. I used 9-3-5 guano and
put 400 pounds on the IM acres. I
made 1,125 pounds of lint. My total
expenses including fertilizer, seeds
and labor were $28.25. 1 received a
net income of S6O.
1 broke my peanut land twice. Once
in January and again in March. I
used Spanish peanuts for seed. 1 put
about 2 bushels in 2 feet 6 inch’ rows.
I used no fertilizer. I made 2,250
pounds of peanuts. My expenses were
$22.80. My net income $48.00.
On 1 acre of corn I gathered 48
bushels which I valued at around S3O.
The total cost to make this corn was
$9.15.
I entered the speaking contest in
Cairo in the spring of 1937.
In the fall of 1937 I took up second
year Vocational Agriculture. Mr. E.
।H. Cheek was the teacher. The first
; few months we took notes and did
। some shop work. We studied the dif
iferent types of soil and the best
: suited fertilizer for the soil.
I My projects were 3 acres of to
matoes, 2 acres of cotton, 2 acres of
peanuts and 5 acres of corn. I pre
pared my tomato t bed in new ground.
It was 90 feet long and 6 feet wide.
. I broke it and then raked it. I put
1 load of compost and 200 pounds of
10-2-4 guano on it. I then cut it with
a harrow. I laid some logs around
it. I planted my seed January 10th.
1 drove three rows of stakes 2 feet
i apart, lengthwise around the bed. 1
; used sheeting to cover the bed. March
10th, I set out 1 acre. Three days
1 later I set out the rest. I used 800
1 pounds of 10-2-4 guano. I sold 10,000
। plans. May 15 I shipped my first
i tomatoes. June 15 I shipped my last
ones. I used Marglobe seeds. My ex
penses were SBS. I received a net
J profit of $125.00.
! I cleared SSB on my cotton, SSO on
' peanuts and I used my corn at home.
. I finished school last year but I
am a F. F. A. member right on. I
have bought a Black Poland China
’ boar and gilt. I feed them wheat
shorts, steam bone meal and tankage.
I plan to raise some pure bred hogs.
Studying Agriculture has taught
me the best suited crops to grow. The
ones that have the greatest net return,
! with the least expenses.
