Fattening Feeder Steer!
By JAMES NIX
Last year I got a feeder steer with
the help of our vocational teacher,
Mr. Cheek. The steer was wild and
I could not tame, therefore he
wouldn’t eat much. If he wouldn’t eat
much he could not put on much fat.
I lost two dollars on him, but I de- j
cided that I would try again.
This year Mr. Cheek helped me get ■
another one. He was wild, but not as (
wild as the other one. The calf fat-;
tened as well as could be expected. He'
gained 305 pounds.
When I bought the calf he weighed
260 pounds and cost $20.85. I fed
him 8 bushels of corn, 7 sacks of cot
tonseed hulls, 4 sacks of cottonseed
meal, and 200 pounds of velvet beans. *
This feed cost me $14.80, making the '
total cost of $35.65. I sold the calf i
for 9c per pound. He brought me
$50.85. I got first prize in class
for him, in class A, which was SB.OO. i
I got 3rd prize in judging, which was
$3.00. 1 got several other prizes which
Amounted to $7.30. Making a total of •
$69.15. I made a net profit of $33.50. ■
1 have learned a lot about fattening
steers, but there is a lot I would ।
like to learn. I wish that I could have i
another one next year. I believe that
I could do better. I think every boy I
should try his hand with feeder steers.'
He could certainly learn a lot.
Correct Method Os
Feeding Pigs Told
By BUFORD HATCHER
In Baker County there are com and
beans, peanuts, millet and oats, all |
of which are good pig feed, but does
not make up a balanced ration. What
is a balanced ration? And what
things make up a balanced ration?
It is a ration which furnishes all the
necessary nutrients for proper growth
and development. Carbohydrates, pro
teins, and minerals, make up a bal
anced ration. Some carbohydrate
feeds are corn, oats, shorts and vel
vet beans. Some protein feeds are
tankage, milk, peanut meal, pastures
and cottonseed meal. A good mineral
mixture is made up of one part of
common salt, one part of ground lime
stone, and one part of steam bone
meal. To get the best results a hog
should be fed a balanced ration. A
good balanced ration for Baker County
is corn, tankage, mineral, and graz
ing. It takes 314 pounds of corn, 23
pounds of tankage, and 2.6 pounds of
mineral to put on 100 of gain on a
hog.
If the average hog is fed a balanced
ration he will gain one pound a day.
The best way to feed a hog is by self
feeder. The self feeder saves time,
labor and gives a greater gain.

I My Corn Project
I During Year 1938
By TYLER GODFREY, JR.
Last year I planted 2% acres of
corn of which I grew as a demon
' stration for the Chilean Nitrate Co.
They gave me 200 pounds of Chilean
' Nitrate of Soda to put 100 pounds per
! acre under 2 acres and none under the
other 1-2 acre, however, I put 200
pounds of guano under the whole 2%
acres when planted.
My variety was Hastings Prolific.
At gathering time I figured the two
acres that I used soda under separate
from the 1-2 acre I didn’t use soda.
When I figured up I found I made
60 bushels on the 2 acres I fertilised
with soda which was 30 bushels per
acre, and on the 1-2 acres I got 8
bushels which was 16 bushels per
acre.
After I sold the corn at 50c per
bushel and figured out all expenses,
even to charging myself for the 200
pounds of soda given me by the Chi
lean Nitrate Co., I made $27.50.
So according to this demonstration
it will pay to use soda because it
gives greater yield and better net re
turn.
My Purebred
Swine Project
By ISHMAEL HUDSON
Until January of this year I had
been raising mixed hogs. I was get
ting fairly good results, but I decided
that I could get better results by rais
ing purebred hogs. I asked Mr. Cheek
to help me order one. I borrowed the
money from the bank and ordered a
Black Poland China gilt along with
several of the other vocational stu
dents. My gilt weighs around 90
pounds at the present time. I have
been feeding her a balanced ration
of corn, tankage, and mineral mixture.
I intend to raise every litter of pigs
out under approved sanitary condi
tions. I get a great deal of enjoy
ment out of working with my pro
jects.
