MRS. J. H. MILWARD, Editor and Publisher
THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 1939.
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be con
tent with such things as ye have; for He hath said, I will never
leave thee nor forsake them. So that we may boldly say, The
Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
Hebrews X 111... 5-6.
The most popular church in the country on Sunday, June IL
will be St. James Episcopal Church, Hyde Park, New York. On
that day King George and Queen Elizabeth will attend services,
along with President Roosevelt . . The church will seat only 200
and thousands are anxious to attend.
No more taxes Jn Georgia. This is the report of the econ
omy committee which has been at work for months on this prob
lem.; They believe that the present receipts together with recom
mended economies will be sufficient . With schools already in
debt, and with no funds to. .open up again in the fall, one can not
but wonder if this will work.
Results of an employment survey recently made in the Sa
vannah territory by the National Youth Survey shows that more
places and higher salaries are waiting for the ones who are trained
as electricians, skilled plumbers, mechanics and industrial op
erators than for graduates who seek the low paid and over crowded
so-called “white-collar” jobs. This is something for students who
have finished high school and planning college careers to think
about. •(
All over Georgia schools are closing and it has become al
most part of the regular high school programs for the seniors to
take a trip at the close of school. The classes this year, many
of them, are fortunate in being given trips to the World’s Fair at
New York City. Up to this year the Washington City has been
the goal of many classes, but this year their ambitions led them
further. In buses and trains they have flocked to the great city.
This is a wonderful’ttpportunity which was not formerly enjoyed
and in the past would have been considered impossible.
“Our little systems have their day . . . They have their day
and cease to be.” -
Lord Tennyson was not speaking of the gangsters and politi
cal bosses when he wrote these words, but they are applicable all
the same. Boss Pendergast could apply thdm to his own situation
as could many others who are of his type, even in a lesser degree.
A Federal judge in New York also had a system which has ceased.
His bank account changed from $500,000 in the red to $700,000 to
the good . . . And then his system failed and he too will answer
to the law of the land.
Newspapers all over the country recently carried an account
of the death of a woman. She was a woman ofgreat wealth, but
her prominence was due to the fact that she had been considered
the world’s greatest woman gambler ... . She had also gained
notoriety because, with all her wealth she was frequently sued
for debts, for clothes, hotel bills and other just debts ... At the
same time, in the natural course of events, many other women
died . . . Perhaps their death was recorded in their home paper,
and few outside of the family and friends knew of their passing.
The fame of this woman was nothing to be desired and her rela
tives suffered shame at the attention that was called to her faults.
The average Briton has always taken great pride in the
British Navy. The disaster of the past week, the loss of the new
submarine Thetis with numerous lives has been a blow to them.
The fact that in the American disaster many lives were saved
has only added to their sorrow. Pictures showing the rescue of
the members of the American Squalus are said to have brought
groans and stifled sobs from the audiences seeing it The “man
on the street in England” is quoted as saying, “Look what the
Yanks did. In looking at the pictures of the efforts to rescue
the British boat, one can not help but wonder why only one cable
was attached to the boat . . . This broke ... and the story was
ended as far as rescue was concerned . . . Perhaps other cables
would not have broken . . . Who knows? This was the greatest
submarine disaster yet . . . Which shows that there is still more
to be done to make these undersea crafts successful.
The Term ‘Def Daye’
The term “dog days'' for late
rammer originated in the belief
dogs were likely to go mad at that
time, though actually fewer go mad
in summer than in any other sea
son.
First Use of Name ‘Australia’
The name “Australia’’ was first
applied to a group of South sea is
lands.

THAT URGE TO PAINT
About thia time of the year, the
average Georgia hronensakur usually
gets that desire to dean up and
brighten up the place. And while
she is doing her spring home deen
ing, she often reaches for the paint
brush, for she knows that her paint
ing labors will give the house a fresh,
dean appearance.
For the Mitchell county tawmtg
seised with the spring urge to paint,
here w sonie pncticsl soggcstions:
First, prepare for the job. Get the
right kind of paint for the work you
wish to do, and follow the manufac
turer’s directions, as to stirring, thin
ning, undercoating, and so on. Wall
paint will not do on a floor. Floor or
deck paint has a binder that stood*
up against wear from feet. If any of
this paint is left over, mark it plain
ly to show what it was used tor.
Anything to be painted needs some
preparation. New unpointed wood re
quires very little beyond dusting off.
You can remove building residues like
mortar and plaster with a scraper or
sandpaper. After putting on a prim
ing coat, fill nail holes and loose joints
with putty. Be sure the wood is thor
oughly dry. * < • •
A chalky paint surface can be
dusted off to prepare it for painting.
But if the old paint has begun to
scale or peel, it will have to be scraped
or brushed with a wire brush. Then,
loose putty should be removed from
nail holes and joints and replaced by
fresh putty after the first coat has

GAINESVILLE.—Mr. J. F. Overby
was surprised beyond no end the other
day when he received a letter signed
by “a friend’ which contained a twen
ty-five cent piece. He has friends,
yes! But who would be so kind as to
send him 25c? He knew of no one
owing that amount of money. His
surprise was soon justified, however,
when he read the enclosed note which
went as follows: *1 want you to know
I have thought of this one little thing
many times, and only wish I had taken
it to you instead of taking it myself.
I want to ask yon to forgive Mr.
Overby’s problem now is, “Who shall
I forgive?"

dried. Rub varnished or enameled
surfaces with fine sandpaper, curled
horsehair, er fine steel wool.
Be sore to buy good brushes of the
right site for the work you want to
do. A 3h or 4 inch flat brush is
generally used for walls, ceilings, and
other large surfaces. A smaller flat
brash, 2 to 2% inches, is needed for
wood trim, and a special oval “sash
brush” for painting around window
panes.
Oval brushes are better than flat
ones for any surfaces that are not
flat. Keep one brush for varnish and
never dip it in paint.
Experienced painters never allow
paint to dry on a brush. And they
don’t keep paint brushes in water.
They put them in linseed oil if work
stops for more than an hour. Brushes
that have been used in flat-finish
paints may be kept in kerosene, if
the kerosene is mostly removed be
fore they are used again.
Varnish brushes are kept in turpen
tine or in the varnish during inter
ruptioas, but tor storing over long
intervals they must be washed in
turpentine, dried, and wrapped in
paper. To store paint brushes, be
tween painting jobs, hand them in
raw linseed oil so that the bristles
do not touch the bottom of the con
taiaer.
Perhaps most important among all
preparations for painting is to pick a
bnght, dry, clear day. Dampness in
the air will make the painting job
turn out poorly. .
City’s Streets Run
Red With Vinegar
MARIETTA.—In Marietta a scene
from “The Tale of Two Cities” was
re-enacted the other day when Whit
lock avenue ran red with vinegar.
The smelly liquid flowed along the
sidewalks and into the gutter and
caused a great deal of excitement. It
came about when a 30-gallon barrel
of pickling vinegar burst at a gro
cery store. However, it was only the
setting, the action didn’t take place,
for the scent of the cider was neutral
ised by the generous use of soda, and
the next rooming everything was the
