'A Pretty Kettle of Fish'
In the old days, a kettle, or “kid
dle,” was a fence placed in a stream
to trap fish. When full, it presented
a lively spectacle of leaping fish,
weeds, and driftwood; pretty—but
rather a mix-up. Hence it was that
the saying, “a pretty kettle of fish,”
came to be used for any muddled
up or confused state of affairs, and
we use it in that sense.

June 30 Deadline
For Extension Os
Licenses Stressed
Commissioner Phil Brewster re
iterated today his warning that there
will be no extension of the deadline
for renewal of drivers’ licenses be
yond June 30, leaving only twelve
more week days in which Georgians
may secure licenses for the next
twelve month period.
“We are going to abide strictly by
the Drivers’ License Law this year,”
the Commissioner said, “and any per
son who does not have a valid driv
ers license after June 30 will be sub
ject to arrest. All licenses expire on
June 30 unless they were issued May
1.”
Nearly 200,000 Georgians have al
ready received their renewed licenses,
the Department said, and 100,000
more are now in the process of prepa
ration.
"During this rush period it takes
about two to four weeks to prepare
and issue a license after the applica
tion has been malied to the Depart
ment of Public Safety. The clerks
are working overtime to send every
person’s license as promptly as pos
sible,” Commissioner Brewster said.

Renewal of drivers’ licenses began
on May 1, at which time it was an

•can renew them by securing an ap

enforcement office, or at one central
location in every community. Per
sons who do not hold a Georgia li
cense must apply to State Troopers
and stand the required examination.
This examination will be required of
all persons who do not renew their li
censes before the expiration date,
since the old license becomes invalid
at midnight on June 30 and the driver
would not, therefore, be licensed to
drive in Georgia.
“The procedure is the same as last
year, the driver gets an application
blank, fills it out and mails it with
the same amount of money, SI.OO in
money order or cashier’s check to Box

change is the requirement that all
persons who are not holders of a li
cense apply direct to the troopers at
the time they visit a county seat or
at any patrol headquarters and re
ceive the examination,” Commission-
