And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on
Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him. ‘
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance,
or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: forl
the Lord seeth not as man seeth ; for man looketh on the outward
appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.—Samuel 1. Chap.
16, vs. 6-7.
The Pennsylvania Congressman who received so many let
ters opposing the repeal of the embargo was wise enough to con
duct a poll in his district and found that the majority favored
repeal. He then realized that an organized pressure was respons
ible for the flood of mail he had been receiving.
Any Senator who believes that the repeal of the Arms Em
bargo will bring war to our front door will find plenty of other
Americans who are sincere in believing that unless the Arms Em
bargo is repealed we shall have war at our front door, our back
door and side gate also.
The Washington Merry-Go-\Round reveals that sabotage is
being investigated in the plane factories ... There are thousands
of honest Americans who could be safely trusted with this work
instead of these naturalized foreigners who are being paid twice
. . .Once for their time by those who employ them, and again by
the foreign governments in whose employ they also are.
The German submarine commander won the admiration of
the world for his bravery in daring to enter the Scapa Flow and
humble the pride of the British nation by the destruction of one
of its capital ships. On his return to Germany he was shown
every honor possible. His men, too, received recognition for their:
remarkable deed . . . And when next we hear of Commander Prien,
if we ever hear, he too may lie in a sunken boat under the waters
of the ocean, for not infrequently, “The paths of glory lead but to
the grave.”
The devil himself is a former angel.—District Attbrney Carl
B. Shelley, of Harrisburg, Pa., after hearing a character witness
for a defendant.
Propaganda seems to fill the air as much on this side of the
world as in Europe . . . Senator Holt of West Virginia, the Senator
who had to wait to get old enough to take his seat in the Senate,
has presumed to tell what President Roosevelt has done . . . Which
is unnecessary, since the President is still there to speak for him
self.

Besides the war on the western front there are two other'
wars on in Europe, the economic war and the diplomatic war . . .
England and France have gained the most notable victory of thel
diplomatic war yet when they secured Turkey as an ally. Proof!
of this is the way this victory is being looked on by both Russia
and Germany . . . The official Russian newspaper said, “Russia‘
has no ground to regret what has happened” . . . But Russia has
much to regret in what has happened . . . All of Russia’s aims of }
the past few weeks have been directed at efforts to give Russia
better ports . .. This country, enormous in size, suffers for ]ack‘
of outside connections . . . Vladivostok is the one Pacific port kepti
open in winter and that is by means of ice-breaking steamers . . \
The Arctic coast is closed for months on account of Ice . . The{
Baltic is open a greater part of the year, but other nations controli
the narrow channels that lead into it . . . The Black Sea, with its
vear round warm water outlet has also a narrow channel for an
outlet and here it is that the guns of Turkey control . . . the chan
nel . . . So no wonder the Russian and German papers expressi
dissatisfaction with what has been accomplished by diplomats of
England and France. i |
Stalin has dreaded isolation as much as Hitler has feared
encirclement. Russia is an enormous country, but as far as get
ting out to the sea is concerned it is not much better off than tiny
Switzerland.
South American Mahogany
The most recent discovery of gen
uine mahogany was on the upper
reaches of the Amazon river and
its tributaries in western Brazil and
in eastern Peru. This mahogany
has been on the market only a few
Years and nobody knows over what
area it is to be found, as it comes
from a vast area that has been
little explored. This mahogany has
proven to be of exceptionally fine
quality.
Must Keep Gallows in Repair
Since 1676 a clause in the lease
of Eastwich Farm, in Hampshire
county, England, has required each
successive occupant to keep in re
pair a gallows that stands on the
land and has never been used since
the execution for which it was
erected more than two and a half
centuries ago. Furthermore, says
Collier's Weekly, it must be rebuilt
when necessary, and the present
one is the third on the site. :

Lightning’s Course Shown
Most lightning flashes pass from
top to bottom of the thunder cloud
but occasionally the bottom of the
cloud sparks to the ground and a
tree or barn or a transmission line
is ‘‘struck by lightning.”

The Chow Dog
Nearly everyone thinks of the
chow as a red dog, but he may
also be blue, black, cream, as well
as the various shades of red. A
good one should be heavily boned,
short backed, with straight forelegs.
The head is broad and flat with a
short, blunt muzzle. The tongue is
black. The small ears are erect
and tip slightly forward, and are
set wide apart on top of the skull.
The general appearance of the head
is lion-headed, with a scowl, Eyes
are deep set, dark in color, and
almond shaped. The tail is set well
up on the back and is carried close
ly to the back, following the spine.
From London to New York
The distance from King George
V Dock, London, to New York is
3,300 miles. The journey is some
what shorter from Liverpool to New
York, being 3,073 miles, and also

The Sad Iron
The word sad used in connection
with iron means heavy or weighty.
It is derived from the Anglo-Saxon
saed, meaning full or sated, and
therefore implying weight.
_ . Tam ¢’ Shanter’s Bridge
At Alloway, Scotland, there stands
the Twelfth century bridge across
which Tam o’ Shanter, hero of
Burns’ famous poem, galloped on
his old gray horse to escape the
witches who chased him down the
road.
Origin of Worad ‘Assassin’
The word “‘assassin’ is from the
Arabian hashashin, eaters of hash
ish, the name of a sect in the Thir

Mountain roused his followers’ spir
its by this preparation and sent
