To preserve neutrality the people in Holland have been asked
not to sing, "Hanging Out The Wash On The Siegfried Line” . . .
That is in public places . . . According to radio this song is new and
popular in England.
In his attempts to oust W. L. Miller, Chairman of the State
Highway Department, Governor Rivers seems to have forgotten
the experiences of the past ... He has praised Miller in the past
. . . Now he condemns him for being ambitious ... In the past
the men who have been forcibly ousted from office, have been
returned to office by the voters of the State.
Baker County was represented at the famous Anti-Tariff
which met in Milledgeville in 1832 by Young Allen. The county
was represented at the Secession Convention which also met in
Milledgeville by Alfred H. Colquitt and C. D. Hammond. Both
voted "Yes.” This convention met in 1861 .. . Most of the “Noes”
recorded against secession were from the counties in north Geor
gia.
School officials all over the State are at the end of their
financial resources . . . Some one must shoulder this responsibility
. . . The children of the State are the ones and the only ones to
be considered. It has been suggested that now is the time for a
political moratorium . . . The people of the State will have to get
behind the movement to get funds to continue the schools. When
the present school month is ended the funds provided will be ex
hausted. What then?
'rhe people of Finland have the admiration of the world as
well as their sympathy in the courageous fight which they are
making against Russia, the country with the largest army in the
world . . . Perhaps by the time this is read Russia may have over
run and conquered the Finns. But they have failed to show any
superiority except in force in the opening days . . . Military men
have observed in the past of the Russian Army, that it is a won
derful organization . . . But it does not win victories.
\\ hen Edwin Markham was eighty years old he wrote these
lines which should encourage many younger people who feel that
they are entitled to retire from active duties:
“I am done with the years that were: I am*quits;
1 am done with the dead and old.
The yare mines worked out: I delved in their pits,
I have saved their grain of gold.
“Now I turn to the future for wine and bread;
I have bidden the past adieu.
I laugh and lift hands to the years ahead:
'Come on! I am ready for you!’ ”

And some people use it when abbreviating the word Christmas
. . . In this instance X represents Christ and should not be used
this way. The Americus Times Recorder has this to say of the
usage of the letter X in this manner:
"When you have occasion to write the name of the Maker’s
birthday, spell it out ‘Christmas.’ Don’t write it ‘Xmas.’ Christ
mas means so much that the word itself should not be sacrificed
to save time and space in writing.” The Times Recorder has a
rule that the word must be spelled out in all news stories and ad
vertisers are discouraged from using the abbreviated form in
their ads.

your cards first. You must shout
“I got it” when the dice click with
your numbers, so keep a close eye
on everybody else. Americana ia

| Super Salesman Gets
■ $lO For Match Stem
ELBERTON — Elberton residents
are keeping a wary eye upon “slick
salesmen,” since one of their neigh
bors paid $lO for a burnt match. It
, seems that one such salesman, going
on Barnum’s assumption that “one
is born every minute,” presented a
crowd of onlookers with such a de
monstration of smooth-tongued sales
talk, that he had no trouble at all in
selling empty boxes and other worth
less articled for considerable sums of
money: The match trick was the
super salesman’s final act before he
sped away in his high-powered mach
ine, with a shower of rocks following
him. The culprit first bought the
match from a bystander for a quar
ter and sold it immediately for ten
dollars.
