Over 3,000 Georgians
Will Hunt Waterfowl
ATLANTA—When the season on
ducks, geese and other migratory
waterfowl closes in Georgia December
29 over 3,000 hunters will have fired
at the winged visitors from the north,
the Georgia Division of Wild Life
predicts.
This will represent an increase of
approximately 1,700 over last year,
when only 1,387 persons have lawful
rights to hunt waterfowl.
The prediction was based on trends
noted in the number of “duck” stamps
sold during the early part of the sea
son in post offices over the State. Ap
proximately 1,500 stamps had been
sold during the first two weeks of
the season, which opened November
15.
Up to this year Georgia was a poor
47th, next to last, in the total sale
of stamps.
According to a tabulation of stamp
sales covering the five-year period,
sales last year totaled 1,002,700, with
every state except Oklahoma and
Massachusetts showing an increase
over 1937. During the last five sea-
Making The Home More Livable
Bedroom Lamps, If Correct, Aid Good Grooming
By Jean Prentice
WHITE SHADES are the best
thing for the lamps on a wo
man's dressing table. The why and
wherefore has to do with one’s
.most attractive appearance in pub
lic In the evening!
Did you ever put on your rouge
in your bedroom and go into an
other room only to have some one
poke fun at your flaming cheeks?
(So have I!)
The lamps on one’s vanity table
can be as helpful as a discerning
little French maid or as much of a
handicap to sleek evening grooming
as a—well, as a bad lamp Their
goodness depends on the shades be
ing white (or at least light ivory)
and large enough, the bulbs being
the proper size and the standards
the right height.
If you think, first of all, that a
“white shade would never fit your
bedroom color scheme, try binding
the top and bottom in the color
matching your draperies or bed
spread. Or apply little colored dots
or. stars around the edges and hear
every guest comment on their
smartness.
If your bedroom lamp shades are
rose-colored, you’ll apply too much
rouge which will later be conspicu
bus in the lighting generally found
in public places. „ Witb green or
sons hunters purchased almost 3%
million of the “duck” stamps. The
first stamp was sold August 14, 1934.
Minnesota post offices reported the
largest sales for the 5 year period, the
State’s hunters having purchased more
than 382,100 of the $1 stamps. Wis
consin was second on the list with
266,300; Illinois third with 241,100;
California fourth with 233,300; Michi
gan fifth with 208,900; and Texas
sixth with 208,100.
At least 90 percent of the proceeds
from the sale of migratory bird hunt
ing stamps, which must be in the pos
session of all migratory-waterfowl
hunters more than 16 years old, are
used for the purchase and mainten
ance of refugees administered by the
Biological Survey. Ten percent of
the money is used to enforce the law
and to pay for the printing and dis
tribution of stamps.
Total annual sales throughout the
country since the first “duck” stamp
was issued in 1934 are as follows:
605,000 (1934); 448.200 (1935); 603,-
500 (1936); 783,00 (1937); and 1,002,-
700 (1938). The actual number of
stamps sold in the 5 year period is
3,472,582.
blue shades rouge takes on a mud
dy brownish cast, leading one again
to use it too generously.
You cannot use a tinted lamp
shade if you want to apply your
cosmetics in a natural blend. What
you need is a light as close as pos
sible to that of a regular bulb, sup
plied through a white shade.
And—since we want our cheeks
to match—twin lamps are neces
sary to illuminate both sides of
one's face
Each lamp should hold a 60watt
bulb for sufficient light. To insure
a soft spread of light the shade
must be at least 6 to 8 inches
across the bottom and its transmit
ting quality such that the light will
be uniform A bright spot of light,
or the outline of the bulb showing
through the shade is taboo.
As for height of the standard, get
your tape measure and see what the
distance is from the dressing table
top to your face. It’s a good idea
then to take the tape measure along
to the store with you if you heed
new lamps. The ones you choose
should measure this same length
from base to center of shade.
Two styles of lamps are shown in
the panel, left. The top one, a cylin
drical model, may have a little
advantage in that light is stretched
up and down and thus better illum
