Greenery From N. C. Mountains
Helps Spread Yuletide Cheer
Artificial Christmas? You might call it that, for modern chemistry
has pulled all sorts of synthetic rabbits out of industry's hat for this
years gifts. In fact, today's fashionable miss will find in her Christ,
mas stocking enough synthetics to keep her busy from morning 'til
night. Give a look! °
"Galacking " they call this business in the North Carolina moun
tains, where frost on the pumpkin is a signal for mountain folks to
go a-huntinggalax leaves, sprays, hemlocks, holly and ivy. Within a
few weeks its been sorted, packed and delivered to communities all
over the country for decorating during the Christmas season.
Above: A "galacker” starts early
in the morning and works hard,
but as one veteran says, “Hit’s
plum healthful.'' At night (right)
they must gather round the fire
and sort the day's harvest. This
galacker is grading and tieing ga
lax leaves into bundles of 25 each.
