FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1940.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee:
and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou
walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall
the flame kindle upon thee.—lsiah 43:2.
And when the Grouch Club nominated Ickes as Grouch Num
ber One they did not make a mistake.
Hitler continues to hold on to Stalin, but who else can he hold
on to now ?
The Finns, invisible to their enemies, are also invincible . . .
At least they have proven themselves so far.
The Rivers-Miller fight continues. One wins a round, and
then the other . . . “We, The People” will be the final referees, no
matter how the present referees decide.
No Nobel Prize was awarded in 1939 . . . Let us hope that
there will be many who will earnestly compete for the award in
1940 . . . There were some who could easily have won out as Peace
Disturbers had there been awards.
When the President appointed Attorney General Frank Mur
phy to be Supreme Court Justice, the nation lost a great attorney
general ... He is responsible for some of the major clean-ups of
the last year in several places.
The Lapplanders are not heard of often, at least not in our
part of the World, have been furnishing supplies to the Finns . . .
Their offering was thousands’of reindeer for food, fur coats, gloves
and other winter wearing apparel suitable for the Arctic regions.
The first shot fired at Fort Sumter was referred to recently
as “The shot heard round the world” . . . This is usually used when
referring to the first fight of the American Revolution, but any
how the first shot fired at Fort Sumter continues to echo round
the world.
National Unity was stressed by President Roosevelt in mak
ing his report to Congress on the State of the Nation. “Na
tional Unity is, in a real and deep sense, the fundamental safe
guard of all democracy.” . . . State Unity as well as National Unity
would mean a great deal to Georgia.
One Russion high commander has been removed from his
place and another has been decorated with the highest possible
honor . . . The why of the decoration can not be understood out
side of Russia, as both have failed in their attempted conquest of
Finland.
Germany threatens the Scandinavian countries if they give
aid to Finland . . . But away down in South America the
Uruguayans are sending Finland substantial supplies in the form
of food and clothing . . . This is a result of the arrogant attitude
of the Germans when the Graf Spee was in the harbor of Monte
video . . . And Germany is too far away from Uruguay to worry
about any threats made against them.
King Carol of Rumania has become a very brave King, par
ticularly so in recent days . . . For months he has lived in dread of
the great and powerful Russian Army . . . The army about which
so much has been said ... So powerful it was in men, in planes and
in equipment . . . Something vital to an army is lacking in the
Russiffi Army . . . The Finns have proved this to the world . . .
And so now King Carol unhesitatingly tells the Russians that
Rumania will fight “as one living wall” if Russian armies attempt
to invade Bessarabia.
The war in Europe and the war in Asia affects the farmers
of the South ... In the last war the southern farmer forged ahead.
High prices for his products made him prosperous . . . However,
too few of them looked far enough ahead . . . The war stopped . . .
Depression and low prices for farm products followed . . . Enorm
ous surpluses . . . The farmer mortgaged his farm and lost it . . .
Thousands had this misfortune . . . Now that many have overcome
the bad years they should benefit by the experience of the past.. .
A live-at-home program should come first . . . Before Georgia can
feed itself, the individual farmer must feed himself . . . The
warring nations will have no money when the war ends.

A truck containing $3,000 worth of eggs was wrecked in
South Georgia near Lenox last week . . . Nothing unusual in a
wreck . . . But why should it be necessary for Wisconsin to ship
$3,000 worth of eggs to Florida? If eggs can be sold at a profit
from Wisconsin to Florida, why can’t Georgia farmers wake up
to this ?

GAME MANAGEMENT
ON THE FARM
Part 2—Making Management Fit
The Farm
There is probably no farm in this
county that cannot be brought to
game production if enough time and
money is spend on it but to the aver
age farmer with bad crops in recent
years we must be careful to keep
within practical bounds and we must
plan the farm to take care of the game
crop and coordinate game production
with crop production with practical
farming operations. It is nice to have
an elaborate map of the farm but
far from necessary. With a simple
chart of the farms to be included in

With such a chart the farmer and

Some farms already have a game

there exists practically none.
We begin by studying the existing
conditions and gradually build up a

It will prob
ably surprise
you to learn
that there are
855 telephone companies
serving the nine south
eastern states. The South
ern Bell Telephone and
Telegraph Company is the
largest, it is true. But the
other 854 have the impor
tant job of serving about
1,400 southern communi
ties which have a total of
some 314,300 telephones.
Southern Bell is pleased
that its lines connect with
the lines of these other
southern companies, blank
eting the South with a vast
network of wires—so that
boundaries between com- -
panies are not barriers to
quick, South-wide tele
phone service.
Through teamwork and
friendly cooperation, these
855 southern telephone
companies work* together
to furnish the South with
service that is fast, efficient
and dependable.

wards its fullest possibilities. Old
fence rows will be planted in sumac,
blackberries, shrubs and trees for the
two essential requirements for game
farming and management success de
pends on cover and food. We must
not plant trees or shrubs that will
not fit the area such as wild cherries
which furnishes nests for tent cater
pillars and other orchard pests, nor
buckhorn which harbors the oat rust
disease, nor the cedar near apples.
Plan a planting that will last all
year, certain areas designated to prod
uct at given seasons and we are on
the way, to success and a good farm.
Questions
1. What way would you suggest
in fertilizing a small fish pond and
what would you use?
A. By broadcasting from a boat,
keeping 15 feet from the bank I (vould
use a commercial fertilizer—loo lbs.

pounds of nitrate of soda. You can
increase the carrying capacity from
100 pounds fish to 300 pounds per
acre.
2. How many different kinds and
families of birds are there in Geor
gia?
A. We can boast of over 800 dif

3. Q. What percent of the quail’s
food is made up of insects?
A. The U. S. Biological Survey has
found that 14%% of the quail’s food

Where Bees Find Honey
Honey has always been prized a«
a most delectable sweet and de
rives its sweetness and flavor from
nectar, a liquid secreted by flowers.
The flavor of honey depends on the
particular, flowers from which the
bees gather nectar. Most honey is
made from a mixture of nectars.
However, honey may have a pre
dominant flavor as basswood honey,
buckwheat honey, clover honey, and
others.
