Saturday to be a Banner Day
For Bryan County People
Preparations are being made I
to make Saturday, September
17th, a banner day for Bryan
County. A barbecue will be
served free to the visitors at
Pembroke for the day. It is
planned to entertain at least
two thousand people at a Har
vest Festival at Pembroke Sat
urday, September 17th.
This is no political meeting,!
but a day of pleasure and en-i
tertainment for Bryan Count}’
people and her friends. Every
body is given a cordial invita
tion to visit Pembroke that day.
Come earfy and stay late; bring
all the neighbors and their kids.
There will be something doing
to entertain both tlje old and
the young.
Congressman Charles G. Ed-1
wards hss been invited to deliv-:
era short address on the ques
tions of today, and we are sure!
that this address will be worth!
the trip to Pembroke alone. An!
address will be made on the to-1
bacco industry, and it is hoped
to work up enough interest at
this meeting so that many acres
of our land will be planted in
tobacco another year.
There vMSTbe games and con
tests for the young people.
A prize of five dollars will be
awarded to the oldest visitor
who registers at the office of the

Now Is the Time to Bun the
Factious
t —,
There was never a time like!
"the present to dg away with
factional politics in Bryan
county like the present. The
day that is done will be the big
gest step towards progressive
ness that Bryan bas ever made.
Bryan County has been torn
asunder for the past several
years by two so-called political
factions, the Smith faction on
the one side and the Morgan-
Strickland faction on the other.)
One side is kept busy undoing!
what the other side has accom
plished.
One side will get in and then
they get busy to kick out all the! 1
other side and vice versa. If) 1
one side is for a proposition) (
the other side is against it, not 1
because it is 'bad but just be-)*
cause t|ie other bunch favors it.' *
That one thing alone has
held back Bryan county more) *
than any other ■one thing. Now
is the time to do away with
petty politics and stand up and
work shoulder to shoulder for;
the welfare of Bryan county. !
We have just finished an;
■election where the different
candidates were charged with;
being either aligned with one
side or the other.
There is already talk of the
coining elections, especially the;
senatorial election. This being'
Bryan's time to elect the sena
tor. The Journal offers a solu-j
tion of this Senatorial race that
we believe will re-unite the peo-[
pie of Bryan county for thej
good of the county and cut out
thb petty politics and nagging
of one faction at the other.
That is this: Let Dr. Smith;
name three of his friends, and!
the StricklandtMorgan faction
namfe three of their friends, and
then these six men name the
seventh man, who will then se-;
iect the legislative ticket for
the coming election. This will;
elimir.^kall this faction busi
ness. wV think that these seven;.

A prize of three dollars will'
! be given to the person bringing?,
i the largest number to town on I
any one vehicle for the pay-1
! Register your name and the!
number brought at the Journal
office.
Two dollars will be given the
person coming from the longest
distance, who came especially
i for the big barbecue Saturday.
One dollar will be given the
person who drives the oldest
model automobile to town on
that day.
The festivities of the day will!
begin at nine thirty; there will;
be something doing every min-!
ute of the day from that time'
oh. Get an early start and:
'come and spend the day with
! the people of Pembroke. Con-!
gressman Edwards will deliver
•I a short address at* twelve!
! o’clock, a barbecue dinner will
Jbe served free of charge to
11 everybody immediately follow-i
Jing his address.
I[ In the afternoon more games!
;'! and contests for the children
dand young people will be held.।
p At two-thirty an address on the
i tobacco industry will be given.
-I All in all it is planned to make
I Saturday, September 17th, a
Jbanner’day for Bryan County,]
that will long be remem
rn#ed by those attending.
I men should come from all sec
tions of the Cbunty. It might
be well for each side to name
one of their friends from each
district and then let them se-;
lect the ninth man. This would)
give all sections of the county a)
show at the selection of the
candidates for the senate and)
the house.
Now you said that you hoped
The Journal would help to iron
out the political differences in
Bryan, Doctor Smith, it is now
up to you to show us that your
heart is in the right place by
letting your friends from over
the county and the friends of
the opposition from over the
county select the candidates for
the next election. "We pledge)
ourselves to support any candi-1
date so named.
We invite both the Smith and )
the Morgan-Strickland faction)
J to accept this solution of the!
legislative race and believe that!
[it -will be the biggest step for-[
• 'ward that has ever been done!
j for the re-uniting of the citi
zens of Bryan County.
We do not belong to any sac-!.
tion. We believe that there is'
good in both sides and Fkewise :
) bad in both sides, so let’s do
awav with both and re-unite far
। the betterment of Bryan Coun- 1

upon our safe return to our
own home after the “perilous”
trip over the roads that those
people have to put up with in
the lower edge of the county, I
We know that it is impossible
for the county authorities to
build all of the roads in the
county at one time, and that)
some one has to wait. But we 1
think that the people in the
lower edge of the county have
been “sucking the hind teat”
long enough. They are entitled
to some repairs on their present
roads pending the selection of
the official route by the high
way department.
The people down in that sec
tion have been patient and we
think that the time has come to
give them at least some atten
tion. They have troubles other
than their roads, and we have)
j promised our good friend, Mrs.j
Meyer Goldberg, to help her get;
these straightened out. The,
school conditions at Ways Sta
[ tion are a disgrace to any civil •
J ized community.
If the conditions are such as!
; has been described to us, and
", we have every reason to believe!
that they are, we are surprised;
! that the good people down
there have stood for it as long
las they have. The old school
house has been used by a flock
' of godts for a shelter all along
; during the past years, the pa
; irons were forced to buy a cool-'
; er for the use of the pupils, and
[the school has not the least ex
cuse for a toilet, and the sani
tary conditions at the school
arc beyond description.
The excuse is) given that this
conditjonas what brought about
the fine new scholo for Ways,
which will bq, built this winter.
We congratulate them on the'
prospects of their handsome!
new school building, which we;
understand will be the most
modern building in Bryan
County. But we stand with the
good people of the 20th District
in insisting that something be 1
| “Cap” Duggar was a favorite
|in his home district, carrying it
by a majority of twenty-nine
votes, and he can feel that his
friends at home, where they
knew him better than in the dis
tricts in the lower edge of the
county, stuck by him.
The Journal feels that the
neople of the county have
shown that they are opposed to
the policies of naming people
for office for Lanier was backed
solidly by the Smith faction
and notwithstanding the fact
I that Lanier had great many

having been elected for it once
