Philosopher Shrimp:

Was it the dainty shrimp which
gave Sophocles and Plato their
great sagacity?
The ancient Greeks, believing
that certain foods contributed to
intelligence, were perhaps the first
to call fish and shellfish “brain
food. In one of history’s earliest
cookbooks the Greek author offered
food for thought in both title —
The Banquet of the Learned — and
contents of his work.
The Banquet of the Learned also
quoted a Greek poet on the gastro
nomic merits of various types of
fish. Two of these may be un
familiar, but the third variety is
as popular today as it was in 250

Like the shrimp which caught
the fancy of history’s greatest phil
osopher, many Greek recipes can
be adapted for the modern con
venience age.
Strangely enough, one of the
recipes whish recreate a vignette of
Greek life, was cheesecake! In The
Banquet of the Learned, a husband
complains, in verse, that his negli
gent wife feeds him boiled cabbage
and peas when he hungers for
melon, shellfish and cheesecake.
The poor man probably wanted
cheesecake above all else. It was,
by far. the favorite food mentioned
in The Banquet of the Learned. An
entire chapter is devoted to cheese
cakes, and almost every poet took a
fling at praising them.
Top a cheesecake with sumptu
ous Lyric Lemon Glaze for a des
sert husbands will always praise:
In a small sauce pan, combine
1 tablespoon sugar with 2 table
spoons cornstarch. Add 2 table
spoons Rea Lemon bottled lemon
juice and an 8 ounce can crushed
pineapple with juice. Stir the mix
ture over medium heat, and allow
it to boil for one minute until it
thickens. Add two drops yellow
food coloring and allow glaze to
cool thoroughly before spreading
it over the top of a prepared cheese
cake. A sprinkling of slivered al
monds rates this cheesecake four
stars with Greek and modern hus
bands alike.
Bryan's New Sheriff Takes Oath
Os Office At Gathering Os His
Friends In Bryan Court Room
Friday morning at 11 o’clock a large number of the
friends of the newly elected Bryan County Sheriff,
Harry Williamson gathered in the Court Room of the
’Bryan County Court House to see the Acting Sheriff
turn the office over to the newly elected Sheriff.
Frank 0. Miller, Mayor of Pembroke and a warm sup
porter of Mr. Williamson acted as master of ceremonies
at an “open house”, which was participated in by the
ladies in the Court House, who were more or less giving
the new Sheriff a “welcoming party to the Court House.
Kev. John R. Joyner, a personal friend of Mr. Williamson
was on hand and made a short talk about our new Sheriff
and then he asked everyone to bow their head and led
in a prayer for the blessings of the Almighty God on
the affairs of the Sheriffs office in the months ahead.
The pictures appearing on this page was made by the
Journal Editor and it shows many of those present,
' among them being many of his family.
Truly it was a big affair in the life of this young man,
who is assuming the job of Sheriff of Bryan County
which is a big job, an important one and it takes a man
that is determined to be an upright God fearing citizen
to fill the place, and we for one believe that we have the
7 man on the job, that will do the job to the satisfaction
5 of most of his friends, and many that voted against him,
t will probably remark later on, “well I was wrong in not
. voting for Mr. Williamson, for I believe he is going to
i make us a good Sheriff.
Yes, that is just the kind of Sheriff that we believe we
have on the job. Let’s all of us give him our support and
make Bryan County one of the best, law abiding counties
1 in the State of Georgia, it can be done, and will be done
। if we will all only do our part.
