Family Affair
By MARJORIE JONES
County Extension Home
Economist
Have you noticed how much
warmer the days are getting?
Sorta makes you want to work
in the yard and enjoy the out
of doors, doesn’t it? You know,
this is' also a good time to
make certain your home and
yards are ready for spring and
summer use.
Now is the time to make a
“family affair” of the needed
clean-up and fix-up chores
around your home.
Did you know disorder ranks
second only to poor judgement
as the cause of accidents? An
accumulation of trash is often
the reason for disorder.
Take a minute and consider
this check list for home haz
ards. If you find any of these
at your home, now is a good
time to correct the situation.
Inspect steps, stairs and
handrails. Repair those which
are in poor condition. Re
place unsafe ladders. Avoid
foot injuries by removing
nails from loose boards, pick
ing up broken glass, loose wire
and other potentially danger
ous items. If you plan to paint
a room, do make certain the
room is well-ventilated. Place
oily rags in a tight-fitting tin
can in a cool place. Store in
secticides and chemicals out
of the reach of children. Don’t
store volatile fuels liek kero
sene, gasoline, cleaning fluids
and paints in the house
Remove paper, rags and
rubbish from closets,' attics,
basements, and other areas. In
spect and clean furnace, stove,
heater and chimney.
Once you get started I think
you will be pleased with how
much better your home and
yards will look and how much
safer they will be for your
family. Your home clean-up
actions will also help to make
Bryan County a better place
for us to live and work.
Safety In
The Home
By Brenda Douglas
Most people think of their
homes as the safest place. But
the home may be the most
dangerous place of all. Nearly
every home accident occurs be
cause someone does not realize
the dangers involved or some
one carelessly breaks a simple
rule of safety. About one-half
of all accidental injuries and
tne past, ana mac witn wnat
they have learned and the hard
work that each and everyone of
the Jayeees are putting behind
the Beaufy Show, that this
years will be the biggest and
best that they have ever held.
It is being held on Saturday
night and will as in the past
draw a capacity crowd. There
will be a program to go along
with the “showing off” of our
beauties. The Journal congrat
ulates the Jayeees on putting
on these shows each year, and
feel that it means a lot to all
the contestants, as well as the
top winners.
one - third of all accidental
deaths occur in the home.
Falls cause nearly half of all
accidental deaths that occur in
homes. Slippery floors, tripping
on rugs, and objects carelessly
littered are the major causes
of falls.
Burns and scalds rank second
only to falls as a cause of ac
cidental deaths in. the home.
Carelessness and ignorance of
safety rules cause nearly every
burn.
Faulty electricity wiring can
cause fires, dangerous electric
shocks, and even death. Areas
where electrical wiring is used
and all electrical appliances are
potential danger spots.
Poisoning causes many acci
dental deaths in homes each
year. The main danger areas
are medicine cabinets, and
places such as garages or base
ments where many poisonous
substances are stored.
Cuts and scratches can be
avoided if you handle objects
with sharp edges carefully.
Cuts and scratches cause only
minor injuries. But if they are
not treated properly, they may
be serious.
These are only a few of the t
things that cause accidents in r
the home. If you and your fami
ly will follow the safety rules,
your home will be a safer place
in which to live.

SS Offers
More Benefits
For Children
AUGUSTA (PRN)— Social
Security offers children more
survivors’ protection than ever
before. This statement was
made today by James S.
Trowbridge, District Manager
of the Augusta, Georgia Social
Security Office. He further
stated this is true because
children now receive the same
protection on their mother’s
work record as on their
father’s, due to recent changes
in the law.
Under the old law a child
could receive social security
benefits on his mother’s
record only if his mother had
worked under social security
for l'A years of the last 3 years
of her life, or the child met
] certain stringent dependency
tests.
I These special requirements
i have been removed, said Mr.
~ Tr o w bridge. Beginning
, February 1968, children may
. be paid benefits if their
mother had enough work
। credits to be fully insured.
These work credits may have
been earned at any time. The
amount of work credits
needed depends on when the
mother died or dies. For an
example, he pointed out that a
woman who dies in 1968
needs 4'T years or 17 work
credits for a fully insured
status. Os course, mothers
who died in the past will need
less work than this; some
could be insured with as little
as a year and a half of work.
This is valuable protection
that could amount to several
thousand dollars. If you have a
child in your care who may
qualify for benefits as a result
of this change, get in touch
with your Social Security
Office as soon as possible.
The Social Security District
Office for this area is located
at 700 Telfair Street, Augusta,
Georgia, or you may contact
the Social Security
representatives in your area.

Wine & ^nxiety
Wines are useful in the most
