‘Bat Day’ for
Braves Slated
The Atlanta Braves have
made a change in the date for
their next ‘Bat Day,” and have
completed plans for a new
‘Braves Autograph Booth’
where youngsters can get free
autographs before games at
Atlanta Stadium, the team
announced today.
‘Bat Day,” when the Braves
will give away a free baseball
bat to every child 12 years old
and under, is now scheduled
for Saturday, June 15. The
Chicago Cubs will be the
opponent, and the starting
time at Atlanta Stadium is
2:15 p.m.
The Atlanta Chiefs play
Manchester City, No. 1 team
in England, in professional
soccer at 8:05 p.m. on the
same date. This is a rematch;
the Chiefs defeated
Manchester City, 3-2, here
May 27 before a crowd of
23,141.
The Braves new autograph
booth, behind the left field
fence near Chief
Noc-A-Homa's teepee, will be
open for the first time
Monday night, June 17th. On
this and several other home
dates to be announced, Braves
players will sign autographs
before the game.
Youngsters wishing to get
autographs before the June
17th game (against Cincinnati
starting at 8:05 p.m.) will be
asked to assemble at Gate Q) of
the stadium at 7 p.m.
Members of the Braves
team will sign autographs until
7:45 p.m.
The Braves also announced
that a gigantic display of
fireworks will take place
immediately following the
June 17th game.

" ATLANTA (PRN) -It isa
sad time indeed for Americans
as we reflect upon another
tragedy---the shooting of
Senator Robert Kennedy as he
waged a campaign for
nomination for president.
While we fear immediately a

assassination of President

This crime, like so many
others, does reflect the trend
of disregard for law and order,
the lack of respect for
authority, lack of faith in our
system of justice. This horrible
act of shooting down a man
exercising his Constitutional
right of free speech in
expressing his own views may
well be the fruit borne from
the attitudes of those in high
places, holding responsible
public office and other
segments of our society,
including some elements of
our own free press, in urging
and encouraging the doctrine
of civil disobedience.
The influence of public
figures is tremendous and all
of us need to carefully
re-evaluate the philosophies
these leaders espouse.
The story of the crucifixion
of Jesus is recalled. A large
multitude chose as its hero a
man who represented violence
and lawlessness. They cried for
the release of Barabbas, while
Jesus went on the cross.
They rejected the Prince of
Peace but accepted the one
who stood for all that is wild,
war-like, base and rotten in
human nature.
But those who accepted
Christ and followed him
became part of a movement
which has brought salvation to
untold millions.
This is a Christian nation. It
is so because our forefathers
believed in Christ, not
Barabbas. And these beliefs
became the very heart of our
Constitution and our
Declaration of Independence.

their own self-satisfying

It is witnessed in some of
the cringing leadership in our
nation which, with an attitude
of indulgence, makes excuses
for law breakers and

strong police action to protect
the lives and property of our

He called the group’s action
"“a new type of subversive,”
calling it a very great danger.
History proves to us that a
disorderly society cannot
survive. Every society which
has become lawless has
become lifeless. The ever
increasing eruptions of rioting
in our country reveal to us
that things are out of control.
Is there any doubt, honestly,
that the vrapid spread of
lawlessness has come about as
a result of planned and

~ Arthritis
Sufferers
®
Arel in i1
| ATLANTA (PRN) -- New
survey figures reveal that more
than 400,000 Georgians -- or 1
out of every 11 -- suffer from
some form of arthritis,
according to Dr. Daniel D.
Hankey, president of the
Georgia Chapter of The
Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Hankey said that the
new prevalence estimate are
based on figures compiled by
the U. S. Public Health service
in a 1967 survey and are cited
in the 20th anniversary annual
report just published by The
Arthritis Foundation.
Nationally, said Dr.
Hankey, the survey indicates
there are 16,800,000
Americans -1 out of 11 -
who suffer from some form of
arthritis. Earlier estimates
were 1 in 16 for a total of 13
million.
In 1967 The Foundation
and its chapters raised
$7,072,604, an increase of
16.7 percent. 24 percent went
to research, 23 percent to
professional health education
and training, and 21.6 percent
to patient and community
services.
Contrasting the size of the
problem with the “absurdly
low” amount of money being
spent to fight arthritis, Dr.
Hankey said that the nation’s
arthritics spend:
S6O million a year for
hospital care;
$l5O million a year for
visits to doctors and
therapists;
$535 million a year for
non-prescription drugs and
devices (of which $250 million
is for questionable or quack
remedies).
And actual dollar
expenditure is only part of the
problem, continued Dr.
Hankey. Arthritics in America
suffer 186 million days of
restricted activity, 57 million
days of bed disability and 12
million days lost from work.
Dr. Hankey said that
President Johnson’s surprise
appearance and talk before the
recent 20th anniversary
meeting of The Arthritis
Foundation in New York
reflects a growing national
awareness of the need for
increased research and
education efforts.
The President called
arthritis the Nation’s number
one crippler and said it robs
the national economy of
nearly $4 billion a year. He
said arthritis is one of the
nation’s most vexing problems
... ‘“deep-rooted, pervasive,
mysterious, unyielding . . . it is
buried beneath layers of
ignorance and years of
indifference.”
The true measure of the
nation’s progress, said The
President is revealed in how
much of our nation’s wealth is
allocated to finding the
solution of such problems.
Dr. Hankey cited a section
of the annual reéport titled
“Progress and Paradox” which
pinpoints current attitudes
and barriers to speedier
solution of arthritis problems.
“It is still true,” the report
states, that;
‘““The national dollar
investment against arthritis is
pitifully small.
““Many medical schools
offer the undergraduate
student little or no training in
the rheumatic diseases.
‘“‘Many practicing
physicians do not know how
to treat arthritis to prevent
disability .
“Many arthritis patients do
not see a doctor until they

President Johnson summed
it up very well, said Dr.
Hankey, when he said, “The
age-old ills can be
solved . .. by realism, by
determination, by
commitment . . .by hope
and . . . by impatience.”
Truck Safety
Record Improves
ATLANTA (PRN) - If
America’s organized trucking
industry selected a descriptive
middle name, chances are it
would be “safety.”
Professional truck drivers:
have far fewer traffic accidents’
than any other group of
highway users, the Georgia
Motor Trucking Assn. points
out.
Trucks account for 16.1
per cent of registered vehicles
in the U.S., but only 10.9 per’
cent are involved in accidents,
according to the National
Safety Council.
Automobiles, on the other
hand, make up 81.3 per cent
of registered vehicles and
account for 85.5 per cent of
vehicles involved in accidents.
Constant efforts are
underway in the trucking
industry to better an already
good safely record. Because
truck drivers are professional
drivers, the industry considers
an accident preventable on the
part of the truck driver if, in
any way, he might have
avoided its occurrance,
regardless of fault.
A study of 104,000
truck-car accidents showed 70
per cent were non-preventable
on the part of the truck driver.
In fatal accidents, 80 per cent
were non-preventable.
As the result of industry
training programs, the
professional truck driver today
is a “defensive’’ driver on he
alert for other drivers’
mistakes and highly skilled in
piloting his own vehicle.
Scientific selection and
training of drivers, higher
driver standards, and improved
mechanical devices to insure
safer equipment are
continuing examples of the
urgency with which the
industry views the vital subject
of highway safety.
