Service Station Dealers
Condemn Giveaways
DECATUR, GA., June 3,
1968 (PRN) - GAMES,
FONTESTS AND
GIVEAWAYS AT SERVICE
STATIONS were condemned
today when the Georgia
Association of Petroleum
Retailers (GAPR), largest state
gasoline dealer trade group in
the world, released its findings
after examining 5,000
‘““Chances.” The samplings,
which required testing 14,000
sets of digits, words and/or
photos, took forty-two (42)
hours to examine. Using a
sampling of 1,000 or more for
each of four games presently
sponsored by oil companies in
Georgia, the certified research
and findings place the odds of
the motorists who visits the
service station on an average
of once a week of possibly
winning ONLY ONE
DOLLAR or less at one in two
years; of possibly winning
FIVE DOLLARS at one in
thirty-two (32) years and of
winning ONLY TEN
DOLLARS at one in
ninety -six (96) years.
The Association, in
releasing the report,
emphasizes that it is the
Service Station Dealers who
pay the cost of the games of
chance - not the sponsoring oil
company. Spokesman for .the
dealers, Jack W. Houston,
Executive Secretary of GAPR,
explains that the oil
companies dream up the
games & contests, set up
widespread advertising that
encourages the motorists to go
to their “participating” dealer
outlets to play the games. Mr.
Houston said “short-term

**Chance” handed out to
motorists. The so called ““free
choice” by the dealer is not
realistic says the spokesman.
Circumstances have caused the
retailers to go along with the
gambling schemes against their
will and better judgement. The
dealer organization decided it
is time to show up the
gambling “‘games of chance”
for what they really are.
SAFETY of the motorists
and his family is being
sacrificed while service station
dealers and their assistants
hand out the chances.
Economic survival and
stability of dealers is being
jeopardized as valuable gross
profit and labor necessary to
carry the burden upon dealers
as they operate as places for
“fund and games.”
Mr. Houston says he
believes the gambling games
are in violation of State
Lottery Laws and that they
should be stopped. He cites a
Georgia Court of Appeals
1967 Decision to support his
claim. (Boyd vs. Piggly
