at Emory University on
August 30.
Bishop Cannon was elected

. Bishop Cannon said July 31
that he would remain at his
theology school post through
August 30, at which time he
will move to Raleigh, N. C. He
was assigned to supervise the
Raleigh Area of the
denomination on the closing
day of the jurisdictional
conference. His area includes
215,000 United Methodist
members in 56 counties in
Eastern North Carolina. He
said, however, he would make
several trips to Raleigh
between now and August 30
to confer with his cabinet and
other United Methodists in the
area.
Dr. Mack Stokes, associate
dean, is expected to be named
acting dean at Emory
University until a new dean is
elected by the Board of
Trustees. No time schedule on
election of a new dean has
been announced.
Bishop Cannon is the first
bachelor to be elected to the
episcopacy in the
Southeastern Jurisdiction
since 1808. He is the first
Georgian elected since 1938.
The 52 year old minister
has been dean of Candler
School of Theology since
1953. Prior to that he had
been a member of the faculty,
teaching church history and
theology since 1944.
He has served two
pastorates -- Oxford, Georgia
Methodist Church 1943;
Stewart Avenue Methodist
Church in Atlanta, 1944.
Bishop Cannon received the
AB degree from the University
of Georgia 1937, the Bachelor
of Divinity degree from Yale
University in 1940, and the
Ph.D. degree from Yale in
1942.
Bishop Cannon is a leader
in the ecumenical movement.
Three days before the recent
Southeastern Jurisdictional
Conference convened, he
returned from Uppsala,
Sweden where he was a
delegate to the World Council
of Churches. He was an
observer to both sessions of
the second Vatican Council in
Rome, 1964-65.
He has published the
following books: A Faith for
These Times, 1944; The
Christian Church, 1945;
Theology of John Wesley,
1946; The Redeemer, 1951;
Our Protestant Faith, 1949;
History of Christianity in the
Middle Ages, 1960; and
Journeys After Saint Paul,
1963. A book on the
ecumenical movement, his
eighth, is expected to be
published later this yea .

VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) -
’rices on Georgia-Florida flue
cured tobacco markets were
generally steady Tuesday after
high averages were established
Monday, the Market News Serv
ice reported.
Sales Monday averaged more
than $2 per 100 pounds ahead of
sales for the same time last sea
son.
A few grade averages fluctu
ated about $1 per 100 pounds
Tuesday, but no trend was es
tablished. The practical top
price remained at $76 with some
selected baskets selling for $77.
Quality continued to improve
as the percentage of fair leaf
increased and the proportion of
nondescript declined. Principal
marketings were fair quality of
both leaf and lugs, fair and low
primings and nondescript.
Monday’s average jumped
$2.60 above last Friday’s returns
as 10,910,786 gross pounds sold
for $70.36 per 100 pounds. A few
individual markets averaged
above $73 for the day.
Season sales reached 40,079,-
481 pounds and averaged $68.54.
This compared with only 36.4
million pounds and an average
of $66.51 for the same period
last season.
Deliveries to the Stabilization
Corp, amounted to 6.7 per cent
of gross sales Monday and 7.6
per cent for the season.

BAXLEY — Land clearing for
Georgia Power Company’s pro
posed nuclear-fueled generating
plant on the Appling-Toombs
county line is scheduled to be
gin by Sept, 1, according to Ri
chard Conway, construction su
perintendent.
Conway, speaking to a group
of contractors recently said the

Ato nic Energy Commission will
issue the power firm a license
to begin construction of the
plant in April of 1969 if all
plans meet AEC safety require
ments.
Conway said some 35 or 40
subcontractors will be working
on the plant with employment
of construction workers to
reach 900 persons by the end of
1969. The work force will be
drawn from all over the South
east U.S.
The superintendent said that
most of the workers will be
highly skilled labor in the pipe
fitting, electrical, carpenter and
machinest t: ides. He said an
estimated 60 per cent of the
workers will reside in mobile
homes while th, construction is
taking place and the others will
commute to the.c jobs.
The $l3O million- plant is
scheduled to go into operation
in early 1973 with the company
having an option to install a
second generating unit with
comparable production capacity
as the first unit.
Mrs. Bill Ham and children
of Barnesville, Ga. arrived last
Saturday morning to attend
the Mock-Speir wedding and
remained to visit with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Speir,
Sr. until Wednesday.
Mrs. Hazel B. Kangeter was
admitted to the Candler-Tel
fair Hospital, Sunday, August
4th. She will be a patient there
for four or five days. Her many
friends wish for her a quick
recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Johnson
and two sons of Fredericks
burg, Va. are visiting his moth
er, Mrs. Effie Johnson. They
spent the week-end with their
daughter, Mrs. David Lawrence
and Mr. Lawrence in Orlando,
Fla.

to hamper farmers throughout
the state, the Georgia Crop Re
porting Service says.
Showers have been so scat
tered that some areas within a
single county did not receive
benefit of them, the service said
