The new Holiday Inn near
Richmond Hill was the lovely
setting for the fall meeting of
the Associated Garden Clubs of
Southeast Georgia, Nov. 21, at
which Mrs. John Hall, of John
Hall Florist, Savannah, was the
guest speaker.
Garden club members were
greeted in the foyer of the Inn
by members of the hostess
clubs and presented with iden
tification tags bearing lovely
artificial flowers.
The meeting was called to
order by the president of the
Associated Garden Clubs of
Southeast Georgia. Mrs. Elton
Warren of Metter. Mrs. Charles
Jones, of Hinesville, officially
welcomed the guests, and Mrs.
Robert Minick of Brooklet, sec
retary, called the roll of garden
clubs and read the minutes of
the last associated meeting.
The treasurers report and pub
licity report were then given.
Mrs. Warren introduced the
guest speaker, Mrs. Hall, to the
clubs, explaining that members
were indeed honored to have
such an expert craftsman in
the art of flower arranging pre
sent the program.
"Mrs. Hall has conducted de
sign schools in all the south
eastern states, and was recent
ly invited to Washington, D.C.
to present wedding bouquets
typical of the south,” Mrs. War
ren noted.
Wishing garden club members
a "Merry Christmas,” Mrs. Hall
told the grodp she was going tc
present ideas on how to deco
rate the home for Christmas
Punctuating her remarks on the
basics of good decorating wit!
thoughts of the true meaning o'
Christmas, Mrs. Hall began hei
talk with a list of good mar
ket items to help decorater:
with their Christmas designs
She especially praised a num
ber of spray paints in gold an<
green colors, and the commer
cial leaf gloss.
Mrs. Hall encouraged the .use
of fresh green foliage native to
Georgia such as pine and cedar'
and suggested that it be eut
soon and placed in containers
of liquid made up of her own
receipt which preserves the life
of the foilage and enables it to
last indefinitely.
After showing a number of
commercial items already made
up, such as garlands, fruit
clusters, and tree shaped bases,
which could be used as pur
chased or to enhance original
Christmas designs of the indi
vidual, Mrs. Hall presented a
fascinating array of Christmas
arrangements which she had
previously created in her shop.
Approximately forty designs
and inventions displaying Mrs
Hall’s unique creative talent
i
was matron of honor. Brides
maids were Mrs. Billy Kennedy, <
and Miss Janet Bacon. Pam
Kennedy was flower girl.
Mr. Eddie Chester was best '
man and ushers were Michael '
Bacon, Murry Waters, and Dan
ny Waters.
After a reception at the
Church Social Hall Mr. and
Mrs. Waters left on a wedding
trip to Florida. The couple will
make their home in Garden
City.
were shown, with which she
gave detailed information con
cerning materials used and
methods of construction.
Among the items displayed
were glass stack containers ir
graduated sizes containing fruit
flowers, or Christmas greenery,
wreaths of every size and color
featuring bells, stars, wooden
or ceramic figures of the na
tivity scene, fruit, and the tra
ditional balls, and arrangements
built on styrophone bases such
as tree shaped cones covered in
fruit.
Wicker baskets and matts
have proven to be popular con
tainers for Christmas decora
tions this season, Mrs. Hall ex
plained. She presented a num
ber of designs using wicker
such as a small square basket
filled to overflowing with green
boxwood, set off by small red
apples and two-tone ribbon bows
of red and green.
Mrs. Hall gave her audience
a number of hints on how to im
prove Christmas decorations.
Using a spotlight on door and
window adornments adds to the
beauty of the decorations, es
pecially if a colored light to
match the major color of the ar
rangement is used. Old .a n d
faded wreaths ma y be given
new life by spray painting them
entirely and adding a touch of
glitter, a new bell, or a cherub.
Ribbon should not be overly
used, as it is only for accent.
Mrs. Hall concluded her pro
gram with the statement that
she had thoroughly enjoyed be
ing with the group, and by re
minding them that a little im
agination can work wonders.
Following a delicious meal of
shrimp creole, salad, butter
beans, rolls, and a sherbert des
sert, Mrs. Amar Martin gave
a response to the welcome. Mrs.
Martin commented on the gra
ciousness of the hostess clubs,
the three garden clubs of Hines
ville, the Long County Garden
Club, and the Glennville Gar
, den Club.
Miss Eliza Martin of Mossey
Oaks Garden Club of Hinesville
received a five dollar award and
a lovely gift for accumulating
the most blue ribbons. Mrs.
H. L. Stacey of the Hinesville
Garden Club also received a
gift for having the best ar
rangement in the flower show.
A number of door prizes were
given before the meeting was
adjourned for the members to
more closely examine the love
ly designs brought by Mrs. Hall
which were exhibited on several
display tables in part of the
Inn’s dining area.
