fy for Mayor for the
city of Pembroke.
Councilman Owens has
served the citv faith
fully and well in his
capacity as Councilman
and as Mayor pro-tem.
Councilman Owens is
one of Pembroke's out
standing businessmen,
being vice president and
General Manager of
Shuman-Owens Supply,
Inc. near Pembroke and
also has business in-
terests in Columbia S.C.
Mr. Owens is active
in his Church and all
its activities. He is
a member and steward
in the Pembroke Metho--
dist Church where he
and his family are
active in its affairs.
Mr. Owens will be
a credit to our city and
we feel sure he will
carry forward the
efforts of the late F.O.
Miller and N.L, Ham to
the full benefit of all.

Banquet Held
The annual Mother-
Daughter Banquet of the
Bryan County High
School FHA Chapter was
held Friday night, May
Bth, in the school cafe
tor ium.
The theme for the
banquet was “Moments
To Remember”. Tables
were overlaid with red
checkered cloths, with
centerpieces of small
white whicker bird
cages containing red
roses and white doves.
Debbie Raulerson,
FHA President, greeted
and welcomed the guests.
Melanie Speir gave the
invocation. The candle
light ceremony present
ing the purposes of the
FHA was given by Diane
Kennedy. Diane Smith
and Kay Bazemore led
the audience on an
imaginary journey into
the past, present, and
future of the BCHS FHA
Chapter with special
emphasis being placed
on FHA projects and
activities,
Mrs. Charles Warnell,
guest speaker, pre
sented an inspirational
message entitled “The
Difficult Art of Being
A Mother” and “The
Difficult Art of Being
a Daughter.”

IN HOSPITAL
Mr. W. Hagan Dubois
of Pembroke entered the
Memorial Hospital in
Savannah Wednesday,
May 6, after suffering
a heart attack. He was
placed under intensive
care and his family re
ports that he is
somewhat improved and
hopes to be released
from the intensive care
division soon.
The children of Mrs. R. M.
Winter honored her with a
Mother’s Day dinner, Sunday,
May 10.
Children of Mrs. Winter at
tending were Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Winter, Mrs. Grady Harvey,
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Eason;
grandchildren were Edward
Winter, Joe Winter, Jr., and
Beth and Amy Winter and Ken
neth Peoples; visiting later in
evening were Grady Harvey,
and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Den

Morrison announced
Tuesday, that a total
of 88 people donated
blood to the American
Red Cross Bloodmobile
from the Chatham-
Bryan County Chapter
of the American Red
Cross in the South At
lantic Regional Blood
Center.
Visiting Pembroke
from 3 to 8 p.m. Thurs
day, May 7, the Blood
mobile was housed in
two air conditioned rail
road cars located near
the Pembroke Depot.
Morrison explained that
the use of the railroad
cars was a departure
from the usual blood
mobile operation and

Regional Meet
Bryan County Jaycees
and Jaycettes were re
presented at the Region
10 quarterly meeting at
the House of Sirloin in
Statesboro Saturday
night, May 9, by seven
couples from the local
Jaycee-Jaycette Chap
ters.
Hosted by the States
boro Jaycees, the
meeting was called to
order by regional pre
sident Eddy Rogers.
Following an invocation
by Delaine Dukes and
the pledge to the Flag
led by Lee Alexander,
representatives from
the seven chapters in
region 10 enjoyed a
steak supper.
Jaycees and Jaycettes
separated for their in
dividual business meet
ings after the evening
meal, with the main
topics of business being
the election of regional
officers and the presen
tation of regional a
wards. Dr. Lindsey
Morgan of Claxton ^as
that at this time is the
only unit of its type in
operation. He commen
ted that this method
proved more satis
factory than past
procedures.
Morrison expressed
his appreciation to all
those who assisted with
Bloodmobile activities
as well as those who
donated blood. Helping
in addition to young
ladies from the Bryan
County High School FHA
Chapter were Miss
Carol Duggar, Mrs.
Warnell, Mrs. W.L.
Humphries, Mrs. Jewel

10 days in Florida, Miss.,

Following the gradua
tion they accompanied
SSGT Brewton to his
home in Del City, Okla
homa where they visited
with Mrs. Brewton and
their three lovely
grand daughters for
several days. Prior
to the graduation they
spent the week end in
Crestview, Fla. with
a sister of Mr. Brewton,
Mrs. Lalia Moore and
family; Mrs. Tom
Smith, another sister,
accompanied them to
Crestview.

leave for one year tour

Disadvantaged school chil
dren in Bryan County will bene
fit from five special programs
under Title I, ESEA, during the
fiscal year 1970, according to
State School Superintendent

Funds of $39,109 will finance
projects in English, reading
and physical education — rec
reation activities as well as
food, library and transportation
services.
Title I funds under the Ele
mentary and Secondary Educa
tion Act are distributed locally
on the basis of the number of
school age children in the school
system from families with less
than $2,000 annual income.
School leaders plan their own
projects to fill locally determin
ed needs then submit them to
the Georgia Department of
Education Title Coordinator R.
C. Beemon for approval.
