CLAXTON, EVANS
COUNTY TO RECEIVE
$25,000 FOR REFUSE
DISPOSAL PROJECT
Claxton and Evans County
will receive a $25,000 demon
stration grant from Governor
Lester Maddox which will be
used to help defray expenses of
capital investment needed to
implement a refuse disposal
project in Claxton and Evans
County.
This demonstration project
was the result of a refuse dis
posal study made by the Geor
gia Southern Area Planning
and Development Commission
at the request of the Evans
County Joint Planning Com
mission. The local Planning
Commission adopted the refuse
study and recommended that
Evans County and the cities of
Claxton, Daisy, Hagan, and
Bellville implement the refuse
disposal plan. The refuse dis
posal plan recommends that
Claxton and Evans County
jointly acquire a site and oper
ate a sanitary landfill near the
center of Evans County.
Realizing that the joint city
county refuse disposal project
is an ideal demonstration pro
ject for the State of Georgia to
show how the refuse disposal
problems can be solved through
a combined community effort,
Senator Joe Kennedy and May
or Perry Lee DeLoach went to
Atlanta Tuesday, and presented
the Evans County refuse dis
posal plan to Governor Maddox,
who responded with a $25,000
demonstration grant, to encour
age such projects in the State
of Georgia.

Friday
1 The Apache, Cherokee, Black
’ feet, Commanche, and Crow,
each composed of 3-A students
’ of Miss Joan Stepion, held a
tribal council behind the R.H.S.
lunchroom Friday.
In order for third graders to
learn first hand how it was to
live as an Indian, the class
spent the day living and work
ing as Plains Indians each as
[ he had chosen in his respective
1 tribe.
The squaws baked the bread
and cooked the “buffalo meat”
and tended the papooses, while
the braves went hunting and set
up teepees and shelters.
They exhibited Indian clay
pottery and artifacts the mem
bers of the tribe had made, also
baskets woven from reeds and
other pieces of nature craft.
The tribes gathered in great
council at the time of the
“great sun” and held ceremoni
al dances and chants.
By the time of the “cool sun”
all tribes had left in peace and
returned to their own hunting
grounds.
