By The Numbers
NEW YORK (ED)—Everyone’s
statistic-happy in this computer
ized society of ours. Not just base
ball batting averages, tax benefits,
but—and, after all, this is the year
of the census—even when it comes
to such everyday tasks as mowing
your lawn, there are some interest
ing numbers involved.
Know how many people in the
U. S. operate power mowers, for
example? Some 27 million.
And how many of them are
operating power mowers for the
first time (their own, that is)?
Four million.
That power blade . . . know how
fast it spins? About 19,000 feet
per minute.
Now you’ve got yourself the
making of a rather sobering equa
tion. When almost 30 million
people operate machines involving
a rotating blade that moves at
19,000 feet per minute, chances are
ripe for accidents caused by care
lessness.
Like the accidents caused by
stones and twigs and other objects
thrown from the power mower by
this rapidly-spinning blade. If
you’re in the line of fire, you could
be seriously hurt. Always keep the
lawn clear.
The Outdoor Power Equipment
Institute also reminds you that if
you don’t know enough to dis
connect the spark plug before try
ing to service the machine —near
the blade —you’re flirting with real
trouble. Just a touch of a ma
chine’s blade while the plug is still
connected could possibly start it
roine. Much like a propeller.

There was a business

committee reports for
the past month were gi
ven, and new business
discussed for the month
of May.
After the business
meeting the program
entitled “The World A
part from Christ” was
