Owens, Jordan Qualify miss mary iane u of

Qualifying for Mayor
in the city election to
be held June 9 for the
city of Pembroke was
J. Harry Owens, who is
one of Pembroke’s out
standing businessmen,
and active in his church
as well as civic and
city affairs. Mr. Owens
we feel, will make an
outstanding Mayor of
our little city and we
wish him the very best
of luck in his endeavors.
Qualifying for the
office of councilman for
the city of Pembroke on
Thursday, May 28, was
Edwin Jordan of Pem
broke. Jordan will be
seeking the office to
replace councilman,
Harry Owen.s who re
signed in order to qual
ify for the office of
Mayor left vacant by
the late N.L. Ham.

councilman and mayor
for the city of Pembroke
James Golden Heads 4 County Unit
James B. Golden, Bryan-
Chatham District Soil Conser
vationist, U. S. Department of
Agriculture was appointed, ef
fective June Ist as District Soil
Conservationist for Bryan,
Chatham, Liberty and Long
Counties.
The four counties are now
consolidated into one work unit,
and presently the business for
the Unit will be conducted out
of the Bryan County Soil Con
servation office. According to
Mr. Golden, “he will be work
ing one day per week in each
county or as the need varies
he will work accordingly."
Mr. Golden has been District
Conservationist for Bryan-Chat
ham work unit for ten years.
He holds a B.S. Degree in Agri-

and vote on Tuesday,

age 9. Mrs. Jordan is
employed by the Com

pany of Claxton.

Mrs. Ronald
Spier Visits
Mrs. Ronald Speir and son,
Ron of Del Rio, Texas are visit
ing her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Mock for several weeks.
Mrs. Speir suffered complica
tions following an apparent eye
examination while in Del Rio
recently. It was decided that
she return here to see the fami
ly’s eye specialist in Savannah.
Mrs. Speir and Ron were met
at the Atlanta Airport Thurs
day by Mr. Mock who accom
panied them to Travis Field and
on here.
Since returning here, Mrs.
Speir (Betty Jean) has improv
ed although treatment is being
continued by her physician. Lt.
Speir remained in Texas where
he is serving with the United
States Air Force.
Daylily Show;
Garden Tour
The Hemerocallis Society of
Savannah will hold its Annual
Daylily Show, on Saturday,
June 6, 1970, at the Isle. of
Hope Elementary School, Park
ersburg Road, Savannah, Ga.
Show time will be from 2 to 6

The “Frances Joiner” Silver
Trophy will be awarded for the
best bloom on scape.
A tour of “Daylily Gardens”
will be held on Sunday, June
7th from 1 to 7 p.m. The follow

Hattaway of Route 2, Pem
broke, Georgia has completed
all the requirements for the BS
Degree at North Georgia Col
lege, Dahlonega, Georgia, at the
end of the Spring Quarter. The
degree was awarded at Com
mencement Exercises on May
31 at 4:00 p.m. He graduated
cum laude.
Bobby was commissioned a
lieutenant in the U. S. Army at
2 p.m. this same date. Major
General Ellis W. Williamson
was the commissioning officer.
He is the grandson of Mrs. A.
H. Croom of Pembroke.
Lt. Hattaway will continue
his education at the. University
of Tennessee in the fall for his
masters degree in biology. He
is married to the former Lorene
Tolbert of Cummings, Ga.
A.B. Degree in History from
Georgia Southern College at
the commencement exercises on
June 7th. The forty-second An
nual Commencement is sched
uled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday, in
the Hanner Fieldhouse on the
GSC campus. Senator Herman
E. Talmadge, U. S. Senator
from the State of Georgia, will
be the commencement speaker.
Howard is a 1965 graduate of
Bryan County High School, he
attended Valdosta State College
during his freshman year and
was a member of the Tau
Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
He will leave this week for
Pittsburgh, Pa. and will be
married to Miss Margaret Jean
Pollak on Saturday, June 13th
at 12:30 in the Saint Anselm
Catholic Church. He and his
bride will reside in Savannah.

Mr. Kicklighter was
held at 1 p.m. Monday
from the St. Paul’s Epi
scopal Church, with
Rev. William P. Mc-
Lemore officiating. In
terment was in the Rich
mond Hill Cemetery.

the 6th and 7th grades on Fri

cises of Bryan County
High School was held
Official Organ Bryan County and City of Pembroke
auditorium.
Mr. J. R. DeLoach issued the
diplomas for the 7th grade and
Miss Pauline Morgan issued the
Monday night, June 1,
in the B.C.H.S. Gym
nasium. The service,
began with a proces
sional of 54 Seniors.
The prelude was ren
dered by Mrs. R.L.
Osburn.
An Invocation and
Devotional was given by
honor graduate, Wanda
Gaines. Other honor
graduates that parti
cipated in the program
were: Billy Conley with
“A Time For Be
ginning”; Renard Davis
with, “What Greater 1
Gift?”; Jan Martin with,
‘‘We Look* to the
Future”; Cathy Strick
land with, ‘‘Across the
Generation Gap”; and
Glynn Miles with
“Man’s Greatest Gift.”
B.C.H.S. Principal,
Robert Bowers, announ
ced the two top honors,
which were Glynn Miles,
Valedictorian, and Jan
Martin, Salutatorian.

the diplomas.
To conclude the pro
gram, the Seniors, stood
up and turned their tas-
diplomas for the 6th grade.
Honor students in grades 4-7
were issued certificates by the
principal. Albert W. Odom.
