Conservative Forecast.
The remarkable growth of the
South and the equally remarka¬
ble development of the statistical
department of the Manufactur¬
er’s Record, which enables that
publication months in advance
of the census reports to present
a close approximation of South¬
ern growth, is shown in somt
comparisons presented in its last
issue. It is also shown that the
Manufacturer’s Record always
makes a rule in its statistical es
timates to understat e rather than
overstate real conditions, its aim
in this being never to give exag¬
gerated estimates. Discussing
these facts that paper in its is¬
sue of April 28th says:
Prom time to time the Manu¬
facturer’s Record, Jn order to
spur Southern industry and to
encourage Southern endeavor,
publishes estimates of crops or
of other economic efforts in the
South. Not infrequently such
efforts are heralded by individ¬
uals accustomed to gain their
statistical knowledge by absorp¬
tion as wild exaggerations. The
Manufacturers Record has en¬
countered obstructive criticisms
from the time it began, raorfe
than 20 years ago to point to the
future of the South. In many
cases that future ha* become a
past, and what some thought
were “wild dreams” and “exag¬
gerated (stirintes'’ have become
accomplished facte or ultra-con¬
servative statements. For ex- j
ample, March 21, 1901, the j I
on
Manufacturer's Record made the!
-following forecast of what the {
census would show as the total j
value in 1900 of the
manufactured and mineral pro- '
ducts of the south in 1900; ,
Agricultural products $1,220,
jiil 500,000: tnanufaefcu red and miner |
products jSl,548,590.000 -total
| $2,704,000,000.
J>y August 7, 1902, or 17
j months later, the available fig
J lives of the census showed the
j following:
Agricultural products $1,271.
: 054,278; manufactured and min
pro lucts $1,572,991.8 >1—
total $2,844,046,107
There was conservatism in es
j timates to the extent of $80,000,
000 in the total of S2,884,000,000.
Another instance of conserva¬
tism is in the cotton estimate
made in the Manufacturer’s Re¬
cord of Dec- 10, 1903, that “the
value of the present crop, includ¬
ing seed, may be safely estimated
at *$625,000,000.” The official
figures of the c.nsus, nearly five
r-'onths later, placed the value of
h crop, including seed, at $660
5*9,230, a conservative underesti¬
mate of $35,500X00 in a total of
$660,500,000.
