|G. W. H. Stanley, President.
Macon, Ga.
—
Captain W. C. Raoul.
From the Macon News.
Captain W. G. Raoul was for¬
merly a resident of Macon. He
has relatives and many friends
here. He is, and has been for
sometime the president of one of
Macon’s railroads, . the South¬
western, and was formerly presi¬
dent of4he Central railroad, then
for fifteen years president of the
Mexican National railroad, and
now returning to Georgia to re¬
sume railroad work here. The
Savannah Press says Capt. Raoul
“furnished Senator Bacon with
some valuable information which
was used in a telling speech on
tariff abuses in the last days of
congress. Senator Bacon laid
especial stress on the fact that
the steel monopoly, under the
Dingley act, is guilty of the gros
sest extortions and impositions
upon the consumers of its prod¬
ucts in the United States Among
the proofs presented oUthis was
a letter from Capt. Raoul, sta¬
ting that, as president of the
National railroad, he bought
steel rails, delivered at Tampico,
in Mexico, for twenty-four dol¬
lars a ton, while the same con¬
charged for the earn# class
rails twenty-eight dollars a
ton delivered in Texas. The ex
of the extra four dollars
ton was due to the protection
the trust enjoyed in the United
I could afford to ship a
distance at that much less
ton, but greedily availed it¬
to the oppoitunity offered by
tariff to rob the American
at home. While rails
selling in the United States
twenty-eight dollars a ton, it
staled that the Canadian Pa¬
buys from the American
the same rails, de¬
livered in Canada, at twenty-one
dollars a ton. Of course no one
suppopes that the trust is doing
with the Canadian rail¬
road at a loss, or for pleasure. It
no doubt derives a fair profit
from its transactions with that
company. It gets the same pro¬
fits from the American consumer
and seven dollars a ton extra
added because the tariff gives it
the power to rob the domestic
consumer to that, or a greater
extent.
“It takes a long, long time to
open the eyes of the American
people to the extortions
which they suffer. “The mills
the gods grind slowly,’
sooner or later there will be an
awakening, and when it
come there will be a revolution
in sentiment that will effectually
prevent a continuance of
legalized robbery.”
