A Few Pertinent Facts.
Mr. C. G. Lee, of Washington,
a recognized authority on civil
war statistics, has recently com¬
pleted an interesting table show¬
ing the enormous numerical su¬
periority of the Union forces and
the sources from which they were
drawn. From this it appears
that in the Northern armies there
were 176,800 German, 144.200
Irish, 53,500 Eritish-Americans.
45,500 English, 74,900 other for¬
eign nationalities, and 186,017
negroes, a total of 980,917 while
the total armed strength of the
south was but 600,000. There
were 80,917 more foreigners and
negroes in the union armies than
the total consolidated forces of the
Confederacy. In addition there
were 316,424 southern men fight¬
ing for the Union. Of nmn of
northern birth there were 1,273,-
730 in the Union armies, tne
fighting forces of the north ag¬
gregating 2,778,304, or over four
times those of the south. At the
close of the war the north had in
the field 1,000,516 men and the
south 133,433, almost eight to
one
Much has been heard of the bar¬
barities inflicted on prisoners in
southern prisons and the fright¬
ful death rate resulting there¬
from. Mr. Lee shows that there
were 220,000 Confederate prison¬
ers in Federal prisons, of whom
26,436 died, a mortality rate of 12
per cent., while there were 270,
000 Federal prisoners in Confed¬
erate prisons, with 22,570 deaths,
a mortality rate of a little over 8
per cent. With enormous wealth
at its command, with its ports
open and in touch with the com¬
merce of the world, with every
opportunity to secure food, med
icine and clothes for them, the
death rate of Confederate prison¬
ers in Federal prisons waa 50 per
cent, greater than that of Federal
prisoners in confinement in the
south.—Ex.

day last—in broad day-light, no
one being able to account for the
origin of the fire.
When first discovered the fire
had progressed so far as to make
it impossible to approach near
enough to open the barn so that
the horse it contained could es¬
cape.
Mr. Whigham himself was at
home at the time—within a stones
throw of the lot—bnt cou’d do
nothing to save his property from
the destroying elements.
The less is a serious one to Mr.
Whigham, who is a friends man of lim¬
ited means, and his sym¬

Valdosta, Ga., June 19.—For
