The Augusta Chronicle has the following to say about Hon. Hen¬ ry G. Davis, who was made the nominee oi the Democratic party for vice-president on the ticket with Judge Alton B- Parker. “The nominee for Vice-Presi¬ dent on the Democratic ticket with Judge Parker, Henry G. Davis, is a record-breaker in point of age and incidentally be¬ gins ahother record in the pro¬ bation of the South, politically, along the line of highest attaina¬ ble office. Though 81 years old Mr- Davis like Russell Sage, is a phenomenon of health, vigor and alertness. If elected, there is little human likelihood of his un tiraelv death. He is, on the Von Moltke and Pope Leo XIII plan, good for another decade with natural forces relatively unaba¬ ted. He is a Maryland-born man, a cousin of Senator Gorman and father-in law of Senator Stephen B. Elkins, of West Vir¬ ginia, a Bepub'ican. Mr. Davis has mingled politics and busi¬ ness.*’ “He is a straight Democrat, no bolter, and many years ago was h United States Senator. He started as a rail »ay brakeman and, by pluck, industry and sa¬ gacity, in the development of transportation, coal, iron, etc. in West Virginia,, became a mul¬ ti millionaire. He made his money honestly. After selling the West Virginia Central to the Goulds and the Wabash system for entrance, along with the Wes¬ tern railroad, into Baltimore, he began and is pushing its comple tion another great system. He is a thorough man of affairs and an amiable, diplomatic person. He is popular in Maryland and West Virginia, with classes and J masses, and will, in all probabil- 1 itv, carry those states for De j mocracv *, J Senate “In the he old-time ! nited States Was the special friend ! ^ and chum of the grand, old Ro | man Alien G. Thui ir.an, of Ohio, Ho is ti ue to the fundamental principles of the Jeffersonian De¬ mocracy and has done as much as any other man. no matter whom, to advance the material interests of the South, while clinging to her best traditions. Some critical people may object to his advanced age, but lie is really a young old man and many a younger person will go hence before he does. It is the imma¬ ture fruit that falL first. He will enter this canvass with won¬ derful energy that will shame some youthful lymphatics. He will also enter it with abundant sinews of war. He tx.ust have greatly impressed the delegates .it St. Louis to have scored such a rapid and signal victory. “If Parker can equal Davis in vote getting, Roosevelt and Fair¬ banks will retire to private life next November, unless indeed the latter should hold on to his senatorial seat as a plank in ship- I wreck.” Saved from Terrible Death. In the case of pensions of all sorts, the Government takes money out of the pockets of some people to put into the pocket of some other people—and often those from whom it takes stand most in need of it. There may be good reason for the pension —but that reason is not found in the fact that the money is moved from me ownership to another.
