Keep Sweet.
After all is said and done the
conquest over self is the greatest
victory a s$ul can achieve. The
man who never loses his temper,
whatever the provocation; who
never becomes bitter, whatever
his adversities; who never loses
his optimism and sweetness,
whatever his disappointmehts—
such a man is greater than he
who gets his name into the mouth
of the world. This greatness can
be achieved by any of us. It is
as accessible for the humblest as
for the highest, and, though we
fall short of the mark again and
again, the victory is the greater
when once achieved.
Keep sweet. When the angry
word, the bitter taunt, the un¬
charitable judgment, rises to the
lips, leave it unsaid. Uttered, it
becomes an arrow that rankles in
the heart of another and in your
own heart; suppressed, it is a
triumph over the meaner part of
your own nature, and it helps you
win other triumphs. Simple kind¬
liness is the brightest jewel in the
crown of character. The brilliant
remark that leaves a sting shines
by a false light. The word that
is uttered in the spirit p£ consid¬
eration for others has in it a di¬
vine glow.
Whatever we believe or do not
believe, whatever party or sect
we belong to and however op¬
posed is this party or sect to that
of our neighbor, we still can af¬
ford to be tolerant and broad¬
minded. These divisions that
separate us are only seeming,
While the tie of a common hu¬
manity that unites us is very real.
These things have been said
before, but they are none the less
valuable because of that. Most
of the highest truth of life is old
fashioned. Brotherhood is none
the less a desirable sentiment be
cause the word has been in the
mouths of men for 2,000 years.
Sometimes we serve more by a
smile than a brilliant sentence or
a deed meant to win applause.
We are ever too anxious to exalt
the self and to think the world is
going wrong if we fail in our pet¬
ty personal schemes. Broaden
out; learn that there are millions
ol other personalities who count
for quite as much as we; be hap¬
py in their happiness. Though
we gain little for self, be satisfied
if the world is going right.
Few of us mortals appreciate
how much the seasoning of char¬
ity sweetens the cup of life. For¬
getfulness of self and helpfulness
for others consitute the philoso¬
phy of happiness.—The Amer
ic s Press.
Cause of Lockjaw.
Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by a
bacillus or germ which exists plentifully
in street dirt. It is inactive so long as
exposed to the air, but when carried be¬
neath the skin, as in the wounds caused
by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and
when the air is excluded the genu is
roused to activity and produces the most
virulent poison known. These genus
may be destroyed and all danger of lock¬
jaw avoided by applying Cliamberlain’s
Pain Balm freely as soon as the injury is
received. Pain Balm is an antiseptic and
causes cuts, bruises and like injuries to
heal without maturation and in one
third the time required by the usual
treatment. It is for sale by Lewis Drug
Co.

Mrs. Pilmer, of Cordova, Iowa, says:
“One of my children was subject to
croup of a severe type, and the giving of
Cliamberiain’s Cough Remedy promptly,
always brought relief. Many mothers
in this neighborhood think the same as
I do about this remedy and want no

Cotton Picking Challenge.
M. B. Waters, of Statesboro,
has challenged James D. Little¬
john, of Milner, to a cotton pick¬
ing contest. A few days ago Mr.
Waters noted that Mr. Littlejohn
had picked 648 pounds of cotton in
a day, and thereby claiming the
world’s record. Mr. Wateis has
picked 540 pounds in a day, and
played a game of baseball in the
afternoon and drilled at night.
Mr. Waters’ challenge carries
with it a wager of $100, and
agrees to take care of Mr. Little¬
john if he will come to Swains
boro and pay for his ticket back
home should he decide to come.

Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness,
and that is by constitutionwl remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed condi¬
tion of the mucous lining of the Eustac¬
hian Tube. When this tube is inflamed
you have a rumbling sound or imperfect
hearing, and when it is entirely closed,
deafness is the result, and unless the in¬
flammation can be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever; nine
eases out of ten are caused by catarrh,
which is nothing but an inflamed condi¬
tion of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deaf ness (caused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh
Cure. Send for circulars free.

Happiness.
To be truly happy is a question
of how we begin and not of how
we end, of what we want and not
of what we have. An aspiration
is a joy forever, a possession as
solid as a landed estate, a fortune
which we can never exhaust and
which gives us year by year rev-,
enue of pleasurable activity. To
have many of these is to be spir¬
itually rich. Life is only a very
dull and ill-directed theatre un¬
less we have some interests in the
piece, the world is a mere ar¬
rangement of colors, or a rough
foot-way where they may very
well break their shins.—Robert
Louis Stevenson.
