TO BURN STALKS.
Department of Agriculture Issues
an Important Circular.
Washington, Oct. 13.—The de
partment of agriculture has is¬
sued a circular warning the plan¬
ters throughout the cotton belt to
guard against the spread of the
boll weevil by burning the cotton
stalks as soon as the crop is gath¬
ered.
It has been conceded by scien¬
tific experts that burning is the
most effective means of destroy¬
ing the pest, and plans are on
foot to have the torch applied to
the cotton fields of Texas the lat¬
ter part of October or the first of
November.
Cause of Lockjaw.
Ibckjaw, or tetanoN, in caused by a
bacillus or germ which exists plentifully
in street dirt. It is inactive so long a
exposed to the air, but when carried be¬
neath the skin, as in the wouiAh caused
by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and
when the air is excluded the germ is
roused to activity and produces tlie most
virulent poison known. These germs
may be destroyed and all danger of lock¬
jaw avoided by applying Chamberlain’s
Pain Balm freely as soon as the injury is
received. Pain Balm is an antiseptic and
causes cuts, bruises and like injuries to
heal without matmation and in one
third the time required by the usual
treatment. It is for sale by Lewis Drug
Co.

The Albany Herald says that a
colored banker, in last week’s
convention in New York, spoiled
a good deal of Republican cam¬
paign oratory by declaring that
his race had no quarrel with the
Afhite man; that a colored man
was respected in the South as
elsewhere in proportion as he
respected himself, and that he
found no color line drawn in bus¬
