FOREIGN SPINNERS
INVITED SOUTH.
Editor of Manufacturers’ Record
is Endeavoring to Have Visit
Made to Cotton Region.
(Atlanta Journal Saturday Oct. 22.)
If the continued efforts now on
foot avail it Is mqre than prob¬
able that mary of the largest cot¬
ton spinners of Europe, will visit
the south this winter, to study
personally the conditions here, to
see the cotton growing country
and to learn all they can about
the growth ot the staple.
Richard H. Edmonds, editor
and general manager of the Man¬
ufacturers’ Record, of Baltimore,
haa become very much interested
in this proposed visit and is di¬
recting all his energies toward
having the manufacturers come.
The invitation issued some time
ago by Mayor Howell to the lead¬
ing foreign cotton spinners has
been sent, together with those
from many of the leading cotton
men of the south.
Mr. W. G. Cooper, secretary of
the chamber of commerce, some
rfme ago wrote to jMr. Edmonds,
asking for information regarding
the proposed visit. The follow¬
ing is the reply which has been
received from Mr. Edmonds:
Baltimore, Md., Oct. 18-04.
“W. G. Cooper, Secretary
Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta,
Ga. Dear SirAeknowlldging
the receipt of yeura of Oct. 12, I
eptnt Saturday and a part of yes¬
terday with Marshall Stevens,
the organizer of the Manchester
canal, and for some years its gen¬
eral manager. Mr. Stevens is,
however, now giving his atten¬
tion to personal matters connect
j ed chester, with the and development is taking of Man¬
a very ac¬
tive interest in the effort to bring
the cotton manufacturers of Eu¬
rope to visit the south. He re¬
gards this as of mutual interest,
and believes that if the cotton
j manufacturers the continent would of England and
come over
and in person study the south
they would see the possibilities of
cotton growing in this section
such as to interest them very
greatly in the largest develop¬
ment of the south.
“All of the invitations which
were sent to me have been duly
forwarded to the Federation of
Master Cotton Spinners’ Associa¬
tion, Manchester, and Mr. Stev¬
ens, who sails this morning for
Manchester, will in person urge
the matter upon the manufactur¬
ers of that city.
Very truly yours,
Richard H. Edmonds.
Editor and General Manager.
Doesn’t Respect Old Age.
It’s shameful when youth fails
to show proper respect for old
age, but just the contrary in the
case of Dr. King’s New Life Pills.
They cut off maladies no matter
how severe and irrespective of
old age. Dyspepsia, Jaundice,
Fever, Constipation all yield to
this perfeot Pill. 25c. at Lewis

ticket in the coming election.
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy Is
Pleasant to Take.
The finest quality of granulated loaf
i sugar is used iu the manufacture of
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, and the
roots used in its preparation give it a
flavor similar to maple syrup, making it
quite pleasant to take. Mr. W. L. Rode¬
rick, of Poolesville, Md., in speaking of
this remedy, says: “I have used Cham¬
berlain's Cough Remedy with my chil¬
dren for several years And can truthful¬
ly say it is the be.it preparation of the
kind I know of. The children like to
take it and it has no injurious after ef¬
fect. For sale by Lewis Drug Co.

Duty, Then Pleasure.
Mr. Nasmyth, the inventor of
the steam hammer, once said:
“If I were to try to compress into
one sentence the whole of the ex¬
perience of an active and success¬
ful life and offer it to young men
as a rule and certain recipe for
success in any station, it would
be comprised in this: ‘Duty first;
pleasure second.’ From what I
hav i seen of young men and their
after progress I am satisfied that
what is generally: termed ‘bad
fortune,’ ‘ill luck’ and ‘mistor
tune’ is in nine cases out of ten
simply the result of inverting this
simple maxim. My own exper¬
ience convinces me that absence
of success arises in the\great ma¬
jority of cases from want of self
denial and want of common sense.:
The worst maxim of all maxims
is, ‘pleasure first; work and duty
second’.”.
Only Makes a Bad Matter Worse.
Perhaps yon have never thought of it
but tlie fact must be apparent to every
one that, constipation is caused by a lack
of water in the system, and the use of
drastic cathartics like the old fashioned
pills only makes a bad matter worse.
Chamberlain’s Stomach and Liver Tab¬
lets are much njore mild and gentle in
their effect, aud when the proper dose is
taken their action is so natural that one
can hardly realize it is the effect of a
medicine, Try a 25 cent bot tle of them.

Passing of the “Rube.”
The “countryman” promises
to become extinct in the United
StateB. The “rubt” is to follow
the mastodon, the Indian and the
buffalo. The generation that
comes after us will find it hard to
understand some of the present
day jokes of the “b’gosh,” “I
swan” and “go! dern” kind. Al¬
ready quite as many city folks
buy gold bricks in the country as
country folks do in the city. In
fact, the biggest and brightest
gold bricks find ttn-ir market in
town. A city bred man is about
as apt to tangle himself up in a
street ear fender as Uriels Si is,
and not ail the people that blow
out the gas come from the tall
timber —iVashington Star.
