The Prosperous South.
The Architects and Builders
Journal is of opinion that if Hor¬
ace Greeley were alive today, he
would advise young men at the
east not to go west, but south.
Th» report of Bradstreet’s for the
past nine months indicates that
failures in the south are at a min¬
imum. Mr. J. C. Flournoy at the
Bankers’ convention St. Louis,
delivered a remarkable speech
reciting the progress of the south
since the war. He recites the
growth of the iron cotton and
lumber business as well as the
great agricultural improvements
which have taken place. As an
illustration he states that during
the ten years from 1890 to 1901
the north increased its cotton
consumption exactly 13,412 bales
while the south during the same
period increased its consumption
1,333,317 bales, or one hundred
times as much. This has refer¬
ence to the mill consumption and
the revenue from this source is
something enormous. The lum¬
ber trade is no less remarkable.
In 1780 the south had about 6,600
lumber mills employing $23,000,
000 of capital, while in 1900 there
were over 14,000 mills employing
$181,000,000 capital, an increase
in ton years of over 100 per cent,
in number and nearly 800 per
cent, in capital invested. With
this mammoth trade movement
there have been improvements in
the methods of living. Cities have
been beautified by imposing
structures for municipal and mer¬
cantile purposes as well as a bet¬
ter class of residences.
Mr. Hourncy recalls the fact
that the greatest factors in these
atupenduous achievements were
af^d are southern train, muscle
and capital, and ho predicts that
“Southward Ho!” will be theory
jf the new century for ‘ all who
crave the gold and glory that
await the efforts of energy, en¬
terprise and courage in every
field of endeavor in Dixie.”
If is said that the railways t.ave
determined also to divert immi¬
gration to the south, and every
indication points to the fact that
population, power and wealth,
in great magnitude, are about to
develop in this, the most forwai d
region in the world.—Augusta
Chronicle.
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy Is
Pleasant to Take.
The finest quality of granulated loaf
sugar is used in the manufacture of
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, and the
roots used in its preparation give it a
flavor similar to maple syrup, making it
luite pleasant to take. Mr. W. L. Rode¬

his remedy, says: “I have used Cham

Babcock Shooting Affray.
Last Monday night at Babcock
in Miller county, while in an in
toxicated condition, Dutch Jor
dan. a white man, shot two young
men named Coffee, dangerously
wounding one of them and shoot¬
ing the hat off the head of the
other, a few shot lodging in the
young man’s head. No cause is
given for the shooting, except
that Jordan was drunk at the
time. Reports are that one of the
young men may die. Jordan has
been arrested and lodged in the
Miller couny jail, whqre he will
await trial.—Bainbrilge Search¬
light.
Only Makes a Bad Matter Worse.
Perhaps yon have never thought of it
but the fact must be apparent to every
one that constipation is caused by a lack
of water in the system, and the use of
drastic cathartics like the old fashioned
pills only makes a bad matter worse,
Chamberlain’s Stomach and Liver Tab¬
lets are much more mild and gentle in
their effect, and when the proper dose is
taken their action is so natural that one
can hardly realize it is the effect of a
medicine. Try a 25 cent bottle of them.
