Cane Growers Convention.
To the cane growers of Georgia,
Florida and Alabama and all buy¬
ers and dealers in Georgia Cane
Syrup:
You are invited to attend a
meeting of the Georgia Cane Syrup
Association to be held at Cairo,
Ga., Saturday, October 28rd, at
110:30 a. m. This association was
j organized at a mass meeting held
jat Meigs, Ga., Oct. 9th and officers
were elected and the Cairo meet¬
ing called.
The definite purpose of the Meigs
meeting was to devise a system ol
! grading Georgia Cane Syrup and to
| induce the buyers of syrup to make
I such a difference in the price of
[high-grade syrup and low-grade
syrup as will encourage the far¬
mers to make a larger percentage
of the fine syrup and a less amount
of the low grade syrup. This mat¬
ter will be further discussed at the
Cairo meeting and it is hoped that
| the dealers in syrup will respond
to the call as this point largely de¬
pends upon them.
Two other important matters
that is vital to the future success
of this industry will In; presented
! at the Cairo meeting by the Presi
dent for consideration and action.
First: The securing of lower
and more uniform freight rates on
syrup to all points. At present
this product is barred from a large
I and promising territory nearby by
excessive freight rates.
Second: The increasing of the
; consumption of this syrup by an
! intelligent and persistent campaign
[of publicity to be conducted main
! ly in virgin territory where Geor
: gia cane syrup is not now consum¬
ed.
Every indication points to an
immense increase in the acreage of
sugar cane in .the near future in
Georgia, Florida and Alabama,
and it is the part of wisdom to
take time by the forelock and do
everything possible to widen the
territory in which this product is
marketed and to increase the con¬
sumption in the territory
already covered; otherwise the
time will shortly come when we
will again be selling Georgia (jane
Syrup at 13 to 18 cents per gallon
as was done in former years.
The consumption can be increas¬
ed by putting a finer and more un¬
iform article on the market. The
territory can be widened by prop
per advertising, and by uniform
and reasonable freight rates to all
points.
The work outlined above can on¬
ly be done by an intelligent work¬
ing organization, and such an or¬
ganization can only be made effec¬
tive by the hearty cooperation of
growers; dealers and refiners of
syrup. Therefore, all who are iu
terested in the welfare of this in¬
dustry are urgently requested to
attend the meeting at Cairo on
Oct. 23rd.
Boards of Trade and Merchants
in the cane growing section are
particularly urged to have one or
more representatives attend the
meeting.
A lack of interest in this matter
will cause the movement to fall
flat and the entire cane growing
section will suffer thereby.
Growers of cane are also invited
as the scope of the Association
should iuelude a department for
the improvement in cultural and
manufacturing methods to be adop¬
ted by the growers.
Correspondence in advance of
the meeting with interested par¬
ties, with suggestions, is solicited
by me.
Yours truly,
W. B. Roddenbery,
Cairo, Ga.

Association.
