Owl Hollow, June% '08.
Mr. Editor:
Since we ure living in “sicli” a
fast age, and since the biggest
thing bomb of our officers do is to
secure Rural Routes for we pour'
country crackers, your paper
reached me early last week, and I
“seed” the letter in print that I
“writ” some time ago. I “seed”
a good many mistakes in it and
especially the one that made me
say “bite a bite” speeches. Now,
thar ain’t anything ’‘bitin” much
pow but “tics” (with poli in
front). The thing I said was
“te-te a te-te” speeches.
Speaking of politics and as
your paper comes out as the bal¬
lots are being counted allow me
to make a few brief and scattering
remarks in my weak and feeble
way.
To me the whole game of poli¬
tics is one of disgust. While
every citizen should exercise his
franchise, still there is a limit.
You can have too much of any¬
thing from chicken pie to qar
tetts at a commencement. Who
is the real man that does his
country good any way? Is it the
politician or the voter who walks
the streets button-holing every
man he meets, arguing the merits
of his friend who perhaps is in
the race and whose demerits far
outhtimber his merits? I answer
no, he is not the real man. Is it
file man of means, who although
a member of the church, boasts
t)f the fact that he has so much
money up on the election and is
sure of winning every dollar his
friend has against his? No, he ie
not. the real man, for if the court,
church and country gave him
what he justly deserves he would
suffer with the “cuffy” who plays
“skin” or throws dice for a pen¬
ny a toss.
Is it the man who sits under
electric lights and with a blockof
-ieft-ftgnr byjtvAm-knpiid-by- an.
electric fan writing “cards” or
making “speeches” to the dear
common people? Certainly no,
for the cards, speeches, etc., are
all for effect and when the office
is won they have no more use for
the common people than the
angels have for the Georgia peni¬
tentiary.
Well, who is the real man? and
whose work is it that stands? I
answer that man only is great
who touches this world for eternal
good, and only that work abides
that has in it the real elemental
forces of the Christian religion,
for whoever awakens the great
energies of religion touches the
elemental force in human life; a
force deeper than politics, loftier
than any literature and wider
than science.
What will it matter to you, my
friend, a hundred years from now
who is Congressman, Governor.
Judge, Bailiff', Coroner or Cm
stable? All of the works that
these do will be forgotten for tru¬
ly as one says, “We have our
little systems and then pass
away.” We are but the creatures
of a day and but living in the
breath, of eternity. When every
political victory has been won
and t Lie soldiers in the battle are
gone, not even a vestige of them
remain, the religion of Jesus
Christ will abide, for in it only
do we find elements of permanen¬
cy. It has stood the test and
will continue, though the lime
lignt of criticism be turned on
and men read out of it and into
it much that ought not be, still
it remains the one thing that has
prevailed and why is this? Be¬
cause it has for its foundation the
Eternal Omniscient, Immutab e
and Omnipresent God.
This Great Being is continually
striving to impress this world with
ilis greatness. We see Him in
the flowers,* the grass *3, and even
the feathered songsters that greet
us each day as we roam among the,
forests tell U9 of God. Christ is
our advocate with this Great Be¬
ing and through him we shall one
day fully realize the real great
tilings of this world. You ask will
Christ live forever? Yes, he will
live forever, for not until the
the ghost of man shall find a rest¬
ing place ou the grave stone of
God will Jesus Christ die, nor
cease to intercede for us If we
are his and he is ours, if we do
what he leads us to do here, our
work will abide and we shall have
a place with him in that day when
he cometh to make up His jewels.
“Let every kindred, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown him Lord of all.”
Uncle Peter.
He Got it, Bless Him.
Among the passengers on a
Western train recently, says the
Boston Journal, was a woman
very much overdressed, accompa¬
nied by a bright looking nursegirl
and a self-willed, tyrannical boy
of about three years.
The boy aroused the indigna¬
tion of the passengers by his con¬
tinued shrieks and kicks and
screams, and his viciousness to¬
ward hi8 patient nurse. He tore
her bonnet, scratched her hands,
and finally spat in her face with¬
out a word of remonstrance from
the mother.
Whenever the nurse manifested
any firmness the mother chided
her sharply. Finally the mother
composed herself for a nap, and
about the time the boy slapped
thfijjjirsa.fOT the. fifth time, a hug
came sailing in nnd flew on the
window of the nurse’s seat. The
boy at once tried to catch it.
The nurse caught his hand and
said coaxingly:
“Harry mustn’t touch. Bug
will bite Harry.”
Harry screamed savagely and
began to kick and pound the
nurse.
The mother, without opening
her eyes or lifting her head, cried
out sharply:
“Why do you tease that child
so, Mary? Let him have what he
wants at once.”
“But, ma’am, it’s a —”
“Let him have it, I say.”
Thus encouraged, Harry clutch¬
ed at the bug and caught it. The
screams of pain that followed
brought tears of joy to the pas¬
sengers’ eyes.
The mother awoke again.
“Mary,” she cried, “let him
lmve it.”
Mary turned in her seat and
said confusedly.
“He’s got it, ma’am!”
“What is it?” languidly asked
the mother as the screams in¬
creased.
“A wasp, ma’am,” said the
nurse.
