It will be the Four¬ teenth Annual Convention of the B. Y. I’. U., and will bring to¬ gether a large number of workers and a more brilliant array of speakers than has marked any of the previous State Conventions. Mr. Jno. E. Howell, of Moul¬ trie, Chairman of the Program Committe, has issued a very in¬ teresting Program, and announces a number of speakers. Veterans in Birmingham. The confederate veterans have been in se ssion ib ^irmingham this week. The city has been royal in its entertainment of the loved sons of the confederacy. On account of the recent death of their commander Stephen D. Lee it becomes necessary to elect a new commander and much in¬ terest was manifested in the se¬ lection of a successor. The honor may fall upon the shoulders of per¬ haps the most beloved veteran of the cival war, Gen. Clement Evans of Georgia. Gen. Evans is himself getting old and feeble but he sits his horse erect and virile and is a picturesque cl a-r cter in any ' parade 1 of confederate veterans. We have been put to a great dea’ of expense in rebuilding our exchange and putting into it much more expensive apparatus, and we find that our expenses are aggregating more to keep our ex¬ change in good order than our in¬ come amounts to, therefore we are compelled to raise our rates to $1.75 for residence phones and $2.75 for business phones. How¬ ever as we will not send out any more collectors, which has been quite an expense to us, we will al¬ low a discount of 25 cents on each phone, payable at our office on or before the 10th of each month in advance; under no cir If!
