Will somebody turn off the steam. There is quite a new wrinkle in Pelham dog society. After Sat¬ urday they will all wear collars. The crops in this county are as a rule in good condition with prospects of a tine harvest. There is still alive in the breast of the legislators a spirit of '‘re fawm.” At least the convict lessees think so. nominated by the Independence League for the vice presidency of the United States. The convict investigation is assuming proportions and it is hinted that certain political as¬ pirants are smiling by force alone. All hope of learning the con¬ tents of the famous Joe Brown letter has vanquished and it seems now certain the legislature will not take action on the boom¬ erang that landed Mr. Brown in the Governor’s chair. As long as the state’s convicts are let to the highest bidder for their labor the horrible conditions now being disclosed by the legis¬ lative committee investigation will continue. The maximum labor for the least money will always be the criterion of the convict lessee and to obtain the maximum of labor from a con¬ vict the whipping boss and his strap are inevitable. Unsatisfac¬ tory conditions and inhumanity are as sure to follow the present system as the crop follows the planting It is hardly conceiva¬ ble under the recent disclosures that our representatives will renew the system. And yet there is fear that this may be done. A personal letter from citizens who feel an interest to their represen¬ tatives and friends in the assem¬ bly expressing their views on the subject would be pertinent and tiirfely. There is a feeling of much in¬ terest as to what the grand jury is fixing to report and recom¬ mend . They have made the u: - usual record of remaining in ses¬ sion several days after the other business of the court was finished and several days longer than they themselves expected to. be in session. Georgia is playing quite a part in presidential politics, furnish¬ ing two hopeless candidates; one the presidential nominee of the populist party and another the vice presidential nominee of the Independence League. Notice. All dogs not wearing tags after August 1st, will be killed, accor¬ ding to the new town ordinance. These tags can be received from the clerk of Council A. A. Turner at the cost of $1.00 each. C. D. CROW, Marshal. Post Office Location. Congressman Jas. M. Griggs sends us for publication for the benefit of all those who are inter¬ ested, the following letter receiv¬ ed by him from the Post Office Department, regarding the post office location in Pelham : July 9, 1908.
