Fighting Floating Island*.
There Is a clear waterway between
Cairo and Uganda, the equatorial lake
country of Africa. At times, ho wet er,
the entire stream becomes blocked with
mosses of “sudd." great masses of papy
rus and other floating vegetation, says
Dr. Milne, British medical officer of
the upper Nile district, in Harper’s
Weekly. To undo these blocks the
men jump down into the grass with
the ship’s anchor and fix It firmly in
the roots, the order “Full speed astern”
is given, and the steamer backs out.
After a varying number of Jerks the
Island is forcibly torn away and goes
floating down the stream. Now the
Nile is open, from lake to sea. and a
constant patrol of steamships prevents
the “sudd” from impeding navigation.

A certain suburban house contains
five unmarried ladies who are contin¬
ually sighing over “what might have
been.” Recently a rag and bone col¬
lector was pursuing bis avocation to
the vicinity, and through an open win¬
dow were wafted the strains of his
sonorous chant, “Old rags, old copper,
old iron, old brass, old bones, old bot¬
tles, old shoes, old hats,” and so on,
until he had named almost every
known object. Then he ceased, and
one of the ladies mentioned sank down
into a chair, threw up her hands and
exclaimed dramatically In accents of
despair: wants everything but

Who Columbus Was.
In the afternoon in one of the schools
a part of the time was devoted to the
study of the life and deeds of Colum¬
bus. An amusing reply was given by
one of the pupils. The teacher had
told the class of the wonderful voy¬
age of Columbus and how he insisted
on continuing the voyage after the
other men were clamoring to return.
Then she asked, “Who was Colum¬
bus?” with the view of hearing bow
well they had followed her talk. One
little hand went up.
“Well, Johnny, who was he?” asked
the teacher.
“Columbus was the gem of the
