A ,<:ri cultural Depart’ ini. T« Kid JfngH of Idee. “\V. K. CL,” Henrico Co,, Va.—To flwlroy licp upon hogs, rub well into the bristles, along the qiino, on the brisket, and beneath the arms and thighs, a mixture of lard und tsulphcr Well rubbed together. Fresh Manure Und for Potatoes, “J. It, f J\,” Palmyra, 0.— Fresh manure is hurl ful to potatoes. This crop needs old, well-rotted manure, or the tubers are apt to be scabby, and to be infested with white worms. Fresh manure may be used for corn without any ill effects. The corn rather likos it, There aro no jiota- ' t#es so clean und free from blemish as those grown with the artificial fer tilisers, Washing Wheep. Very few persons know how to properly wash sheep. Having for many years had the carcof 2,000 head, it was desirable to come at the very host manner of conducting this im portant operation. A great many different plans were tried, till at.last I was taught that which I now de scribe,^l>y un old Scotch shepherd. 1 have seen it nowhere else in hho, and ns it is ho much more eflleicnt than other ways, and at, the same time easy for the sheep'and convenient for the washer, it ipny be worth while to describe it, Hut first lot us consider what hap pens when sheep are washed In the Oplnmon way by hand-rubbing, nrm- rtibbing,‘dr elbow-rubbing. As the lleeee grows it gets into the way of opening iiito crearos, forming rings of wool an inch or so wide running around the body. If a slice]) at wnsli- ing-tiino doubles to the left,.approach ing its head to its tail, thosq open ings or ureaseH in tho wool will he disclosed on its right sido, l bo partings marking the wool into the rings I have spoken of, 1 f thpplroeivphices ituel|i)i L this posturo twenty times the wool will always part in tho sumo places. Now, if a sheep bo taken into tho water und tho wot lloeco squeezed, pressed, or rubbed, tho natural part ings of the llocoo aro closed up, the wool becomes matted together, tho flow of the water is impeded or ob structed altogether, and uo amount of squeezing or motion .will suffice to cleanse the wool as desired. More over, the wool will very often remain matted together after having boon shorn, presenting in tho floeco an unsightly appournaco. My S^fl'h friend called his meth od tho plan of washing by rolling. Having got Ins sheep into water of proper depth as quietly as possible, the wuslvov turns it upon its buck, pusses his arm under tho sheep’s head und grasps its nose firmly with the right hand. With tho loft ho takes hold of both- fore legs, and swaying his person slightly to tho left, ho rolls tho sheep over to tho loft side; then ho rolls it to jtho right, arnVso on until tho water comes from the sheep perfectly clear. The motion will |>o found a very easy one for the washer, and a kindly one for the sheop. Fifty or sixty rolls will thoroughly wash any sheep; forty to * fifty usually is enough. As the sheep is rolled backward and forwnhl, the water is forced freely through the natural partings ami through nil parts of the tleeoe, and tvs the wool is not matted sa as to obstruct tho flow of water, it become* thoroughly cleansed. I generally place tvs many washers in the stream as I have hun dreds of sheep la bo washed in'any one day. The catcher on shore hands the eheep to t he man lowest down stream ; he passes it to tho man next up stream to him. The best man is stationed at tho outcomo furthest »p the stream. All t he sheep pass through his hands. When ho is satisfied that « slteep is well washed he lets it go to shore and roaches for the sheep in tho hands of the man next below him. Ho takes tl\o sheep of the man below him, and so on. In this way a hundred sheep for tho man von bo washed during tho time it is proper for a man to remain in the water, " A bright clear day should be cho sen for the washing.—.1 reins V.
