Pursuant to call, the people of,
tiAuren* county assembled in mass
mooting on yesterday (the 6th ihsfc.,)
• to take some action ih regfjfl-d to tho
4 Oconee river appropriation. The
'meeting w’lurcalle'd to order by Sher
iff Mntahdoh, bhil Ool. 0. S. Ouv-
; ton was cailed tb tho Chair and Mr.
J R. 8. Blftckshear requested to act us
•'SoOrbtkry. After the object of the
meeting Wiis explained, I)r. J. T.
Tihlippell offered the following roso-
'lution: -
Whereas, an appropriation of
•10,000 has been appropriated by
Congress, for clearing out tho Oco
nee river.
Therefore, bo it rosolved .by the
peoplo of Laurens county in conven
tion this day assembled that it is
the sense of onr peoplo that it is
most to the interest of tho matter in
question thut Ool. Frobel, who seoniB
to have tho mutter in chargo to pro
ceed to do tho work or have it dono
under his supervision, and that in
case it is impracticable for him to
do so at once, that he or whoso
ever is authorized, put the matter
in the hands of tho sovon following
named gentlemen us commissioners,
to wit:
Joel T. Oonoy, Oapt. T. F. Will
iams, of Montgomery oounty, Ool.
0. S. Guyton, Hon. J. T. Ohuppell,
Judge Jno. T.JDUnoan, Dr. Luoion
T. McBride, or Washington oounty,
Mr. T. M. Freeman, of Wilkinson
county, who may bo empowered
with all authority delegated by Con
grew in making this appropriation
and oarrying on tho work.
After tho resolution was offorod,
Stubbs, who always dies hard, rose
and spoko for two hours to got tho
mooting to endorse tho notion of his
meeting on tho 22d ultimo. But
after ho had exhausted ovary "way
that was dark, and triok that was
tain," only nine or ion out of a
court home full sustained his substi
tute, He failed as signally us ho did
in the male transastion in Macon.
This matter of appropriation being
settled, the
abolition of whiskey
from Laurens oounty was thon takon
into consideration. After a heated
debate, the following resolution was
adopted by a small majority:
Resolved, that it is the sonso of
thie mooting that tho salo of intoxi
cating liquors is demoralizing and
immoral in its influence on tho poo
pie of Laurens oounty, and should be
abolished by the Legislature at Urn
earliest day practicable.

JW. Poet:
Your readers will romombor the
rude reply of Jaoobus to my criticism
upon the errors he mado on tho
questions mentioned.
That is not worthy of a reply, as
it wan a vigorous effort to dignify
and bolster wp what he knew was
error, or that it was inexcusable lack
of information. 1 therefore write
limply to confirm my opinions, vrhioh
1-do by qnoting high authority, hav
ing their replies before me. 1 quoto
first from a gentleman who is quite
familiar with politics and who has
large experience, haying served
long time as chairman of the State
Executive oommmitteo:
»*The chairman of an Ex. commit

committee and they fix the time for
pteeting of a convention. But never
pn hia own responsibility when it is
puwible to assemblo tho committee.
Otherwise, bp may assume thp re
sponsibility. A congressional oom
mitteemen has no authority whatever
in calling a convention' over tho
chairman. Their duty is confined
jo district meetings and not the
pounty convention. They are ap-
pq’nted by tho ohairman 6f tho dis-

regulated strictly by county
pommittews.”
Another author OU the other ques

"Gan, Cuok introduced the bill
for the suney of the Oconee river
from 'its mouth to Milledgeville.
He also introduced bills for appro

statement to the contrary is false.

doing well. When the train stopped
at Coohran, Mr. Buroh requested the
conductor to stop his train before
arriving at Eastman so that he could
get off and not have to walk half a
mile baok through the rain. When
nearly opposite his residence, the
train halted, and Mr. B. stepped off
the train, but instead of stepping on
the ground as ho supposed, he hap
pens to get off just at the place
where there happened to be a short
tressle and went down about fonrteen
foet. He managed to get up and
make his way home, when Dr. H
Fisher was summoned, who carefully
examined him, but found no bones
broken or any serious injuries. At
this writing he is doing as well as
could be expected after snob a fall.

Heretofore, if the heater pr rtoumer could
do the work, it was either too costly, too

invention meets the long desired wunt.
1st. It is cheaper by far than any other
effective machine iu the world that does its
work.
Sd. It sits upon ft light frame, by which
it may be lifted and carried from place to

8d. With it the washing of clothes is
rendered comparatively easy by the mere
motion of the furiously boiling water, the
steam bleaching them white.
4th. Y ou may start the boiling in eight
