OUR .TAIL.
If the last Grand Jury wore right,
(and we think they were) in saying
that a jail is intended merely as a
place, of confinement; and : nob as a
kennel. Laurens county unquestiona
bly needs a new jail. The present ken
nel is the very refinement (so to speak)
of disgust. Two women occupy the
upper portion, which makes it nec
essary for the othof three prisoners to
lie kept in the dungeon. This
dungeon is entered by a trap
door from the upper room, and
is lighted and ventilated only by four
very small holes about a foot square.
To keep such a jilace clean or sup
plied with air fit for an\thing hut a
maggot to. breathe is impossible.

Dr HI, IN (4a., Nov. 11, 18<8.
Ed. Pox/: •
Please allow us through the col
umns of the people's paper (The
Dimix Post) to say a few words to
the people of Laurens county in re
gard to a jutrt of the proceedings of
the meeting held at the Court House
in Dublin on the f>th inst., iu refer
ence to the liquor question.
Such a burlesque was never wit
ness* din Dublin before. After two
short, weak arguments by the prohi
bitionists, and two eloquent and
truthful arguments by the side of
Bight and Liberty, a rising vote was
called for, and the party that believe
indite rights and liberties of the peo
ple had a majority of at least fifteen
votes, some say twenty, and this will
he sworn to by a number of respon
sible gentlemen. But, strange to
say, tlie defeated party claim the
majority. Now Mr. editor,
to show, the thing in its true light
It lias been proven that there was at
least one hundred and fifty men
inside the Court House, and every
mail voted one way or the other, but
mark, the prohibitionists do not
claim put forty-one votes, now, sir.
on what side did all these other vot
ers vote? There were but t wo sides,
no middle ground, and, as before
stated, every man voted. Then that
lurge niajor ty did certainly vote for
their rights ahd liberties. All of
these facts, sir, will lie sworn toby
gewtlomen jof trutk uml veracity.
Now Mr. editor, we have always
believed that there are ways that will
maky men popular, but it is not in
such ways as that. The wav'for men*
Hti fctist jUioir popularity is by-running
for office in tlie "gift of the people,
and oar very humble advice to some
men is to try, and be eonvineed.
Very res|>cetfully,
Many Citizens.
