THE POST. DUBLIN GA, NOV. 27. 1878. Terms, $1.50 a year in advance. The Organ op Laurens County. — Circulation over 600. Local Aflkirs. Read the Ordinary’s Ferry notice. Mr. Temple of the Atlanta Nursery was in town last week delivering fruit trees. Mrs. B. F. Mason,, a most estimable Indy ; of this county, died on the 18th inst. Mr. W. M. Roach presents the Post the biggest sugar cane of the spason—OJlbs. Thanks. • • f Y Thigpen, presents the_ Post ito, and says' he has plenty Mr. Richard a 5} lbs. potato, more like it. The Savannah News thinks the Post irreverent to. speak of-llie Jldn. Alexander H. Stephens as the man of little skillet no toriety. The exercises of Gordon Institute in Dodge eounty. under the supervision of Prof. John T. Lee, formerly of this coun ty, will close ,on the Otli of December .with an exbibitioii’at Wight. For the bdhefrt bf oiir numerous renders who somdtirriei 'engage in the timber busi ness, we ciiiiiftAm the Timber Ga-ctte some valuable , iifAixidtioU to timber cutters. Read it in ddbtl'ier'column. At a recent meeting of the manufacturers of fertilizers it was agreed that the price of a ton of standard fertilizers should be five hundred pounds of middling cotton, deliv ered in Savannah by the farmer. The Atlanta Constitution sees it announc ed in the Post that a tin shop lias been opened in Dublin, and on that fact buses a prophecy that Dublin will some day be a great city. Master Tilman Wolfe has been very sick for several days with pneumonia. He is one of the most talented and promising youths in the community, and it would be a sad blow, not only to the family, but to the community, if his attack should prove fatal. We invite" attention to the clear, calm, dispassionate view of the whiskey question in this issue of the Post by “Critic,” Avliose heart and pen are ever active in the living issues of Ins county. . Read This! You will save money by paying your notes and accounts by the 10th of Decem ber ; after then will be turned over to attorney for collection. Dublin, nov 18-3t T. II. Rowe Erratum.—We printed about a hundred copies of the Post last week before we dis covered^jliat we had m ula the lion. Neil McLeod^s proposed Whiskey tax $200 In stead of $2,000, as it should have been. Mr. Ed. Holmes, Jr., swapped his horse to a mule drover last week for a good mule getting $15. to boot, and the horse died in less than twelve hours with grubs. Mr. II. says he is ready to return the $15. We had quite a pleasant call on Monday from Judge M. L. Burch of the Easttnan limes. The Timex is one of the b£st Con ducted country papers on our exchange list, has a large circulation in Laurens, the old home of the Judge and is the only pa per of which the Post is jealous. The minor that Mr. It. T. Dorniny is no longer a candidate for Tax collector is un founded. lie requests us to say to his friends'and the Public generally that he is still in the field soliciting their support, and will in no event oonjc down. 2t It will be impossible for us to give per sonal attention.to our collections in John son, and we hope that our subscribers in that county who have not yet payed, ev ery man of (1mm, Will call upon our agent, \V. P. Hicks and settle at once. tf. We want the party who takes Mr. S. J. Kellam’s Pd.Sr from the post-office to bun dle up a dollar and .u Half, come over and subscribe. Mr. K. says he never gets his paper; and we know we always mail it every week^ JW(ymi^pjeased to know that the Pofr*4^wecfityl; bat it pleases us a little too.ifel\!fo^opB tp'! appreciate it so much that he cabbages a copy that sonic one else lias paid for. We are glad to learn that our represent ative, Mr. Bureliv -has. been . placed on the Wild Lands Committee. It isnu important committee for several reasons. Its business is to look into the most odious swindle ever perpetrated on the wiregrass portion of the State, and the land grabbers will lie ready to buy up all purchasable members. Mr. B. knows how to represent his outrageous ly wronged constituency,' and no money can buy his vote. Hon. C. S. Guyton, tlic chairman of the mass meeting of the Sth'instT, was in town last Saturday for the first time since the meeting. In answer to our inquiry as to what he thought of the disputed vote on the whiskey question, lie said he thought the anti-whiskey wing had a clear majori ty; but that the action df the'meeting on the whiskey question was worthless, be cause the meeting had fallen into confusion after tlic settlement of the principal ques tion for which they had been called togeth er, and were not prepared to deliberate on any other, -He added that he had written to onr repreSontafhY'Hon. H. M. Burch, advising him of the^e facta, 10,000 Tickets Per Hour. Candidates in Laurens and Johnson are re minded that the office of the Post is the place to get their tickets priuted with neat ness and dispatch. We arc prepared to turn out 10,000 handsomely printed tickets per hour. tde ROASTED ALIVE ! The Old, Old Story—A Babe Lett in a House Which Burns Down On It. On the evening of the 20th ii.st. about sundown the alarm of fire was raised in the extreme South part of town. The source of alarm was found to be a negro cabin afire, on the place of Judge Kitjncs. On the morning of tho 20th instY the steamer Colville left the D.ublip wharf with seventy bales of cotton for the Central Railroad. She pro ceeded prosperously up the river till about three miles-above town, when the bow struck a rock causing the store to dip and. the prow to sheet up, and fall with great violence on the rocky bottom. Seven holes were pierced in the bottom and the water soon rushed in and filled the boat. She sunk, or rather lodged, in water about five feet deep, leu - ing the lower dock above the water’s edge. The cotton being put ashore, and men and buckets sent for, Capt. Henry set to work to patch np and halo out the water. After working three days and two nights, he suc ceeded in again setting her afloat, and returned to Dublin with her.
