Wllfakey Drinking.
Take any equal number of intern-
ate and temperate persons from
liftecn to twenty years of ago, while
eighteen of the intemperate die, only
ton die who are temperate; hut bo*
. tweon the ages of twenty and thirty,
live Intemporato persons die to only
one temperate ; between thirty and
forty the proportion is four to one.
Hut look at it in another light.
If a man is temperate up to twenty
hirtOlmuecH for life is forty-two years,
that is, he is likely to live until he is
forty-two years old; if intemperate,
lie will most probably die at thirty-
five; thus tlioso who drink liquor
freely while young, scarcely live out
half their days, as a rule; living
longer the less they ‘‘indulge.”
Then there is tile cost of liquor-
drinking. Mr. Ruffner, the very
able and industrious Superintendent
of Public Instruction in Virginia,
says that the retail liquor stores in
that State soli ovor eleven millions
of dollars worth in a year, which is
just about equal to the whole
amount of wlioat raised on its soil;
and if you tukc into account what is
sold in the shape of “bitters,” whioli
is really only liquor disguised, but
more costly, aj million or two, or
more, is added to the unuyint, to say
nothing of the loss of time while
under the iniluence of liquor, and
the expense to the State of prosecut
ing for crimes committed by the in-
temperato; and in addition the cur
ing for individuals and families im
poverished directly by tho intern pur-
ato Imlnts of some members of tho
family; and then there is the morti
fication and heurt-ugony of disgraced
wivos and sons and daughters. And
our representative men in tho halls
of legislature, m almost every State,
and in England, too, will give a man
the privilege of selling liquor to any
one who can pay the money, for ten
or fifteen dollars a year, and this,
too, in tho very dawn of tho twenti
eth century of Christian civilization.
