been fixed upon,
Mr. Arnau tells its that a tidal

A Narrow Escape.
On last Thursday afternoon while
Jones & Co.’s wagon was returning
from the depot loaded with grocer
ies, near the place of Mr. Daniel
Anderson, a large pine limb fell with
great force into the wagon, crushing
in the head of a sugar barrel within
a foot, of the driver, Mr. AV. J. Perry.

On Sunday before last while Mr.

•On last,. Tuesday Mr. A. E. Cor
bett’s little boy, Wade, nearly three
years old, got badly burned. His
cl Miring took fire at the wash pot in
the yard in the absence of the wash
erwoman ; whereupon the little fel
low ran screaming for lus mother.
She met him and cal led'for water,
but all the water convenient was
boiling hot; so she had to extinguish,
the flames with her hands, thereby
getting as badly burned as the child.
The burns of both were very severe
and painful, but not serious. •
“Pa*m, Get me out, I’m Bunting;
up!”
AVc failed in our last issue to got the
most heart-rending feature of the
burning of the tliree negro children
on .Air. Walker’s place last week.
When their father reached the scene
of distress, flic tiro had cut oil thoehil-
dreu from the door and the oldest
one was looking out upon his xuMiei
crying, “Rapa, get me out, I’m burn
ing up!” But nothing
llii’
done. ..
In the Diteli.
On last .'.Thursday as the turpentine
two-mule team was crossing the
bridge over a very deep ditch just
in the rear of the distillery the mules
got a little contrary and treading too
near the ends of the bridge the plank
tilted and preticipated the mules and
wagon all in a pile at the bottom of
the ditch. The wagon was broken
in several places; but the mules were
uninjured except a slight, cut one of
them received from ttriicgro,while en
deavoring to -ever the hame-string.
Dog-Bit.
On last Tuesday morning Air'. I. L.
Harvilta’s little son went, iu compa
ny with a little negro hoy, to take tho
calf to the pasture. While returning
the pickaninny struck a rathor ill-hu
inured dog which accompanied them,
with a switch. The dog thinking
the blow was from the white boy turn
ed suddenly around and snapped him
in the face, cutting an Ugly gash im
mediately above the loft eye, inflict
ing wounds also on the scalp and left
ear. -Mr. Harvillo dispatched the
dog indantcr and brought the boy
to town to have his wounds dressed.
Died i« a Well. -
One of Mr. J. S. Horn’s horses
was killed by falling in a well last
Thursday. It seems that tho hand
who was plowing I ho animal near an
old well protected only by a few
brush and rails, got in an ill humor
with tho horse and began to jerk
him, whereupon he backed around
until ho foil into the well. Tho
neighbors were summoned with a view
of windlassing him out; but before
they got ready tho horse died. His
death was probably caused by being
pierced with a broken rail.

to the ground ; but ho managed to

back to Mr. Blackshoar’s, borrowed a

Our Ordinary, Hon. J. T. Dun
can, had business last Thursday out
iir the western portion of the oounty
and, while out there he called at Dr.
J. T. Chappell’s, of whose fine hogs
he brings back a glowing account'!
He says Dr. 0., a few years ago,
bought a pair of thorough-bred Essex
pigs iii Pousylvania, paying $00. for
them. Ilis present stock of .hogs is
a cross between the Essex and the
common stock, and the Judge pro
nounces them emphatically the best
lot of hogs lie has set, eyes on
since the war. Tho doctor, he says,;
has forty head flow set, apart for next
winter’s killing, which, at fifteen to
eighteen months old, will not him
about 200 lbs. per bead.
The Gobi Snap.
The recent arctic wave has been
