worse than nothing,
make a new start; for if over one set
n!’ people needed reforumtiou, it is
the farmers of the South. In the
first place we need more organizat ion,
us there is less of this among the
farmers than any other class of lms-
we need, more “farmers*

clubs” all o« f er our laud and count ry,
more social feeling, and the experi-
eneo and advice of our neighbors, all
of which lend to constitute unity,
and in unity there is hound to be
strength. In the second place, we
need farmers to make laws to govern
farmers. It jg and lms been a blind
thing in the farmers, to send men to
(ho Legislative halls to make laws,
who- are, in many edsos. Utterly care
less and igu6rtmt 6f the wants and
necessities of the farmer; who look
upon farming as a low calling, and
would not deign to noil thpir fair
hands with hemost labor upon the
farm ; who think it an honor not to
know' a plow from a Imy-staek ; and
in the "IHiiukh eiroles of society,”
boast of their pet ted ignorance. And
again, wo cult!vale too much cotton,
and payjoo little attention to raising
corn, small grain and forage; are too
dependent,upon the North and West
for our supplies of bacon, flour, &o.,
besides feeding our stock on imported
hay, when with far Iohh expense wo
could raise its superior. Another
great drawback to the fur piers is the
present system of labor. It is a set
tled fact that as the produce of the
farm doorcases in value, so must
labor ; lmfc it Seems that the colored
laborer won’t, understand it, and
reasons in this way: “If my work
was worth 50 cents per day four
years ago, why is it not worth as
much now, as I can do the same
amount of labor I did then hut
thoy iftnst he made to see it in a dif
ferent light from this. The farmers
of this (OiipYQu) county have boon
paying 50 cents per hundred for
picking ooftbn f or givrng as much
to have it picked mw, that it is
worth about eight cents per lb., as
they did when if was selling for 15
cents.
Now, Mr. Editin’, do you wonder
that farming does not pay at this
rate? The farmers should work
together—say what they will or will
not do, and stick -to it.

To Judge Cattle*
The following are good and prac
tical hints for judging cattle: An
animal po^cssod of a fine, long, and
mossy coat, that is soft under the
hand, has the indication of a good
feeder, while the fat, as a rule, will
he distributed, giving a good quality
of fine g mined marbled flesh. If the
coat is short and fine, the animal
will probably feed well, but tliore
will bo n tendency to the formation
of intermit fat, instead of that uni
form distribution throughout the
system which is desirable. A harsh,
coarse, win coat is im indication of
poor feeding qualities and of lute
maturity.
Thanking the Public for their liberal
