It is so easy to have the above it
scorns to me every farmer should huve
one, if he has any good himl. But
lie must begin at the proper time to
make t he preparation. A farmer can.
not have a winter pasture if he waits
imtjj wintor to start it, as many do.
Notv is the time to think about it and
commence the preparation. To the
intensive farmer; the farmer who
lives on his place; who expects to
remain on it; who takes an interest
in his business; who recognizes the
value of and necessity for practical
experiments, I would offer the fol
lowing suggestions, and at the same
lime commend thorn with confidence
that arises from practical experience
for 'several years. If rich land or
even moderatoly good land is used, I
do not beliovo there will be uny dis
appointment to the most careless
farmer that will make the experi
ment, if I may so call it, that f sug
gest, Using stubble laud, say turn
it ovor after a season In August. In
.September lay off rows 2} foot apart;
In one. row sow oats, in another bar
ley, ill another oats and wheat and
so on. Put any manure that may he
used in with the seed, then harrow
or brush across the rows. As soon
as the grain is up, run a sweep, liar-
row or cultivator through to kill any
woods and loosen tho 01 nst. In the
course of two or throo weeks break
out tho middles thoroughly with a
narrow shovel. Afterwards sweep
once or twice with a sweep that,
covers the middle. By the middle
of December, or at any rate by the
first of .January you will have a pas
ture for milch cows and horses that
will :lo your heart good, and besides
havo the advantage of a comparison
of the valuo of the different grains
for your particular soil. It will bo
of absorbing interest. As a rule, it
will furnish throo months good pas
ture (two head per aero,) and a very
good prop of mixed grain by tho 2jf»ti}
of May (along this parallel) if the
stock are taken off about tho middle
of March. Do not lot stock run on
it when tho soil is very wot. At
such poriodsg tho grain may bo cut

Millet,
Southern Cultivator.
Much discussion has prevailed of
Into in northern Agricultural Jour
nals, concerning “pearl millet.” Its
wonderful growth and great valuo as
a soiling plant has been especially
dwelt, upon. U may not bo known
to all of our readers that tho plant in
question is tho “oat-tail” millet
whioh has been cultivated in the
south for many yoars. It had its
day bofore tho German millet began
its “run.” Wo do not moun by this
remark, howovor, to disparage the
out-tail millet: for it is really a very
valuublo forage plant—admirably
salted to furnish stabled stock of all
kiuds with most excellent green food
In summer. On rich soil it springe
lip very rapidly after being out, and
very many outtings may he had
through tho season. Every farmer
