The following loiters explain tlienf-

effort to have Watson pardoned. We
feel sui'o that Mr. Bitreii lilts done
all that could bo done under the
circumstances, and wo believe the
Governor is conscientious in his bo-
liof that Watson should remain in
tho penitentiary. But the Governor
doesn’t know, and lie will probably
never know, the true inwardness of
tho circumstances under which that
man wits sdnt; to tho penitentiary.
If so, ho would unquestionably have
arrived at a different conclusion.
Tho chain of ciredinsiances surround
ing tho case id so tangled that an
outsider oaU itover hope to mulci'stand
it iff all its details ; but tho central
fact at which tho Governor should
look is that nine-tom bs of thaoituons
of tho county are of the pronounced
opinion that to keep Watson longer
in prison will be to treat him with
groat injustice*' Watson may remain
live years longer at hard labor in the
coal mines of north Geora’ia, bnt if
ho does it will be because his perse
cutors.hate him so much on account
of the injury they have done Imn
that tlioy ban never find it in their

'To Editor Dublin Post,
My dear Kir:
Knowing that a largo majority of
of tho pcoRlo of Laurens county are
desirous of haviiig David M. Watson,
now confined in the 'penitentiary,
charged with the shooting of Air. ,J.
W. Wright, pardoned by his Excel
lency, Governor Colquitt, I have
thought it necessary .that
I. writo this article through the
columns of .yonr paper in order that
the people might know rny views
upon this matter and be informed of
my actings and doings in reference
thereto, since I Imv-e had the honor
to represent them. In tho outset I de
sire to stato that at first I was oppos
ed to tho pardon of Watson; hut have
since carefully looked intp and duly
considered his case and my mind has
arrived at a’different conclusion. I
now think ho should be tcleased. I
am of the opinion ho has suffered
sufficient punishment for his offense.
Tn pursuance of these, my private
views, and also in accordance with a
wish of a large majority of those
whom I have the honor to represent,
I have gone forward in good faith
and dono what I could to have Wat
son pardoned. I succeeded in gottin t
a favorable report on his case from
the House penitentiary committee,
which committee asked Uhe Governor
to pardon Vim. I havo also gone
before Governor Colquitt in person j
and done what I could for Watson.
In proof of this statement I herewith
appeud a letter addressed to myself;

ful perusal of tho sumo by* all.
Trusting this will suffice to show my
constituents how I stand ami have
acted in this matter, 1 am
