Mr. J. F. L.. Scarborough had a
big rat-killing a few days ago-
measuring up the carcassos by the
bushel.
Mr. Dean Newman, representing
Lippman Bros., the most popular
drummer that visits Dnbliu was in
town again last week.
Mr. Reuben Mimbs and Miss
Nancy Maddox were married last
Thursday night, Mr. John L. Keen,
J. P., officiating.
Mr. Gns Fountain’s horse roared
up with him a few days ago and fell
backward on Mr. F., hurting him
considerably, but not dangerously.
The rainfall in this county last
week was variable. In some parts
there was heavy raining, in others it
was but light. Over in Jackson’s
district they lmd a heavy hail storm.
On last Saturday I put a wallet
containing two balls of net twino by
mistake in the wrong buggy. Will
be glad to have the one who fonnd it
to return the same to Post office.
W. D. King.
On last Wednesday evening as
David Moofiman, Esq., was driving
home from town his buggy wheel
struck some obstaclo and he fell from
his buggy to the ground and got bad
lyhurt in the legs. It is feared the
injury may prove serious.
Mr. Strubing with his bl’ace of
Rozanantes made a half dozen or so of
trips from Dublin to Toombs boro
last week. We regret that wo .are
about to loose Mr. S. We hoar that
he will shortly remove to Millen.
The names of our friends Messrs.
Fortner of Johnson and Thigpen of
Montgomery were unintentionally
placed with those of the lawyers last
week. It was an unintentional act of
njustice and wo beg pardon for same.
Cols. Sam Hall, of Macon, J. A.
Thomas, of Cochran, Charles Loud,
of. Mt. Vernon, are the only three
lawyers who have come in since tho
last issue of the Post. We wore
mistaken about. Col. Harris, of Ma
con being here.
Will the postmaster at Fortner
please forward *the Battle Ground
mail at once m the proper direction?
Our Johnson comity friends are after
us with a sharp stick about the cir
cuitous ramblings of tho paper before
it reaches them.
Col. Corbett had a severe chill in
the court. house last Saturday and
was not able to attend court on Mon
day. He is better though, now, and
will soon be himself again. He had
a severe and protracted attack of
sickness in Macon some weeks ago
and had not fully regained his
strength when ho came oil here to
attend Court. .
We had the pleasure of meeting on
our streets Mr. L. A. Mathews, of
No. 13 C. R. R. on Monday last who
is representing that standard brand
of Fertilizer Brighton’s Ammoniated
Bone Superphosphate. Manufact
ured by Capt. Winfield Peters, of
Baltimore. The trade mark is the
Confederate States Battle Flag and
should bo liberally patronized by our
planting friends. Mr. Matthews was
fortunate iu securing the well known
and reliable house of W. B. Jones &
Co., as Hgeiita, wlio will soon have a
lot on hand and will take pleasure in
supplying those in need of a first
class Fertilizer.
As we go to press the hotly con
tested fight over the jury in the
Moore case has ended, and the fol
lowing are the twelve men who are
to try 3. Freeman Moore for his
life: H. D. Montford, W. H. Reg
ister, D. L. Warnock, G. W. Jen
kins, A; J. Lowry, Thias Lowry,
Ira Swinson, T. H. Sheppard, W.
W. Livingston, Robt. F. Maddox,
W. F. Holliday, Jas. Mincey.
On last Wednesday morning a
horse was fonnd dead in tlio road
near Turkey creek bridge with a
bullet hole through his body and
blood spattered around in a way that
led to tho suspicion of foul play.
Bnt it was afterwards ascertained
that the horse had been killed by a
darkey who lives on Mr. David Ware’s
placo while in a fit of drunken anger.
Superior Court.
Court has now been iu session
over ii week and the interest maul
fested at tho opening of the session
in the case of the State vs. Moore
remains unabated. Tho arrival on
Wednesday of Col. Corbett and the
announcement that he had employed
both Cols. Hall and Lofton gave a
new impetus to the already high tide
of feeling on the subject. The ques
tion has been discussed and discuss
ed again on our streets in its every
possible phase. It is generally con
ceeded that the witnesses to the nn
fortunate catastrophe are mon, at
least most of them, who cannot af
ford to allow themselves tampered
with by either party to the suit.
They have all told it ovor and ovor
again and there seems to bo such
unanimity]among the witness es con
cerning the main points of the evi
dence as to allow neither side any
hope of getting a jury to see the af
fair in any other light than publish
ed in the Post tho day after it oc
curred. So the main hedging has
been for the jury. In this tho de
fense were supposed to have the ad
vantage as the Sheriff is a business
partner of Mr. Moore. But on that
ground tho prosecuting attorneys
raised objection to the sheriff’s tales
jurors and had them set aside. The
Judge then instructed tho roncoer
Mr. W. R. Hoster, to go out and se
cure the proper number of tales.
The witnesses in the case have not
been very prompt to arfewer tho
bailiff’s call, tho Judge’s throats to
fill the jail with them to the contrary
notwithstanding. On account of
tho unmanageableness of tho witness
es and other causes the case has
dragged its slow length along from
tho middle of last week- to tho hour
of going to press without getting so
much as well underway.
Soveral cases of some importance
were tried last week, Mr. J. G.
Wright, of Cochran, had two cases
disposed of. Iu the case in which
he was accused of shooting Watson
the State so completely failed to sus
tain the case that tho Solicitor, aftor
hearing the testimony, withdrew it.
In the other, a little hip-pocket af
fair, Mr. Wright found his witness
‘going back on him* so squarely
that he stopped the case in merlins
res and plead guilty.
J. W. Wright was tried and*found
guilty of assault and battery, which
wo have mentioned elsewhere.
An Important Question Settled.
The expenses of the Court last
week will not fall short of a thousand
dollars, but had nothing been done
further than the settling of tho fact
that the Marshal of Dublin has not
the divine right to beatout the brains
citizens of Laurens county, wo
have paid none too dear for the
whistle. The verdict of assault and
battery which tlio jury found against
Wright for clubbing Scarborough
will do much for tho peace and good
order of society. If that act of
Wright’s had been sustained by the
Court and jury wc should soon have
been in tho deplorable condition of
having every man who happoned to
entertain a suspicion that tlio Marshal
might abuse him, ready to take tho
law into his own hands and to shoot
tho Marshal’s brains out. It was for
this reason that tiie Post has always
taken such an uncompromising stand
against this high-handed violation of
the law.
A Dastardly Crime.
On last Tuesday night while Mr.
Richard Odom was in Dublin, at
tending Oqurt. ih the capacity of a
grand juror, some cowardly villain
taking advantage of his absence went
to his home, in the extreme eastern
portion of tho county, and burned a
house a stack of fodder and some
fence. The house stood some dis
tance in tho field from tho dwelling
and contained a quantity of oats and
all the plow gear. The party who
committed this crime is a very
eligible candidate for the chaingang
and it is hoped he may be detected
and brought to justice.

A Railroad for Dublin.
Cochran Enterprise.
Now that the lease of the Macon
and Bruns wiok railroad has been
effected, and since the loosing com
pany has plenty of capital to build
the extension to Atlanta, and
make any extensions thoy muy think
profitable,.we think that our neigh
boriug town of Dublin should bo
clamoring and pressing her claims, if
she ever expects to hear the whistle
of a locomotive. Dublin has boon
depending on tho river for her means
of transportation, and she has, by
this timo, became convinced that she
has nothing, to expect from that
source. Tho boat is . a complete
failure, aud to make it a success
would take more money than Con
gress will give. Thousands of dol
lars might bo expended iu cleaning
out tho Ocouoe river, and thou
it-would not be in good boating con
dition, s
If Dublin everoxpoots to be arous
ed from tho lethargy into whioh sho
has boon for tho last half a century,
sho must look to her interest, show
wherein a railroad would pay, aud
when she hears - the rumbling of a
train of cars through her streets, new
life will bo infused into her oitizons,
and sho will no longer bo called a
“dead oity.”
The distance from Cooliran to
Dublin is about thirty-five miles,
over a good, level country, and while
two or three bridges would have to
be built, yet comparatively little
grading would be required and the
cost of building would not be so great
as many would think.
A railroad from here to Dublin
could bo built for eight or ten thou
sand dollars per mile, including
rolling stock, &e. This is a vory
small amount for a road thirty-five
miles long, and the citizens of Laur
ens and Pulaski counties could build
it themselves if tho Brunswiok road
ofuses to do so. All wo need is a
little energy and capital.
The Proper Course.
Col. E. O. Corbett, of Macon, the
father of A. E. Corbett, who was
killod by J. F. Moore, has boon in
town since Wednesday.. Ho exhibits
none of the vindictive and revengeful
ptirom-b-of Mr.-Mooroluanij OX-
peoted him to show. Hois prosecu
ting the case with tho air of a man
who simply fools it his duty to de
mand justice at tho hands of our
Courts to which alono in this world
revenge belongeth.

There will be an election for

M. A. Outlaw are candidates.
Mr. Bales never wants but two

Mr. H. V. Kent, of Wrightsvillo,
and Miss Susan B. Kelly, of Tennillo,
wore married last Thursday night.
—Many thanks to Mrs. T. W. Kent
for a nice lot of the wedding cake.
One night last week, some mis
chievous boys, aftor playing several
tricks on a certain man, concluded
to waylay him as ho wont homo
have more fun. A short time after
they had stationed thomsolvos, Jaspor
Sweat, who resembles tho man they
were waiting for, came along.—
Whereupon tho boys sprang from
their hiding places and let in on him
with corn stalks, etc. Jaspor dodged
around awhile trying to find an
opening to escape. Failing to (jo so,
ho happoned to think of his own
club ;vlreh he wielded so fm iously
that the assailants had to take to
their heels, leaving Jasper to hold
the field, on which, wo understand,
ho did not camp.
