Last Monday, while Simon An
derson, a negro, was plowing along
in his field, a few miles above tliis
place, a limb fell on his horse and
killed him. Simon had made con
siderable preparation for planting
his crop, and being unable to pur
chase another horse, may bo consid
ered doubly unfortunate.
Tho moat atrocouis enmo that ov-
or darkened the pages of Laurens
county's history was committed fivo
miles above this place, ou tho Toom-
bsboro road, last Friday night, the
particulars of which aro about as
follows:
Two disguised men wofit to tho
houso of Mr. Joseph Perry, an aged
and much respocted gontloman, and
bioke open the door to his bedroom
with a fence rail, with tho supposed
purpose of robbing him.’ Mr.
Perry was awaked by tho noise on
the door and sprang from his bed in
to the floor j nst as the men broke
in, and was seized by both arms.
He managed, after struggling for
awliile, to effect a release of one arm
when the party that hold it said,
“shoot him 1 Bhoot 1” Immediately
a shot was fired and the two mon
fled from the house, Mr. Perry
reached for his gun and sending a
stray Bhot in the direction of his as
sailants, which was answored by two
pistol shots. . This was at 12 o’clock
and tho rest of the night all remain
ed quiet.
Next morning the negro boy went
oat to draw a bucket of water, saw
a man lying on the ground and rush
ed back aud told Mr. Perry that
there was a dead negro near the
gate. Tho coroner was ad vised hud
the news spread like wildfire. Sev
eral citizens gathered at the place,
and thoro not being enough for a
jury, a summons was sent for S. T.
Tipton, a constable of Bailey’s dis
trict, to go and summons the jury.
His wife sent back word that her
husband left the evening beforo with
Joe Weaver, who had previously
broken jail, and who is under sen
tence to the penitentiary for fifteen
years. Upon discovery it was found
that the masked man lying at the
gate was S. T. .Tipton, who had
been killed by the shot that was in
tended for Mr. Perry. His mask
consisted of a rod calico blouse'which
reached to his knoes, and a hood
with places for eyes, nose and mouth,.
After investigation, the -CoYouW ren
dered a verdict that deceased “camo
to his death by a pistol shot in the
hands of some unknown party, at
the residence of Joseph Perry, five
miles north of Dublin.”
It is generally believed that his as
sistant was Joe Weaver, a nephew of
Mr. Perry, who doubtless wanted the
money to help him evade the officers
of the law. It reported' that Tiptou’s
wife says that her husband had been
feeding some ouo in the woods for
some time.
The community is greatly concern
ed over the matter, and efforts are
being made for the capture of Wea
rer, who is still at large. Marshal
Martih is hourly expectod from At
lanta with bloodhounds that Will bo
put on his traot as soon ns he arrives.
A reward of one hundred dollars bus
been offered for his capture.
Railroad Accident.
On Thursday last, almost half way
between Augusta and Millen, on the
Augusta branch of the Central, both
axles of the driving whcols on the
right side of the engine broke which
caused a delay of soveral hours.
There wore n good many passengers
on board, among whom wore Mr. W.
G. Weaver and tho writer. ^No
damago was done except to the en-
gino, which, owing to the distanco to
Waynesboro, soven miles, the nearest
telegraph office, which had to bo
traveled on foot, was not oleared
from tho track until about night. It
is said to have been the only acci
dent to a passengor train on that road
for several years.
• The passengers wore beginning to
wonder what they should do for din
ner, and had about come to tho rea
sonable conclusion that they would
havo to do without until perhaps
late at night, when, to the pleasant
surprise of all, two beautiful, accom
plished, and very clever young la
dies, MissDaniell, of Millen, and her
friend, MissRogors, passed around
an ample lunch that they had secur
ed before leaving Augusta, for which
they woro voted the thanks of tho
entire crowd.

Death of Hon, Joe Gardner.
The hearts of our citizens wero
suddipod niul pained to here of the
death of lion. Joo Gardner, which
occurred at Fran fort, Ky., on Mon
day, March 7th inst., at G(30 p. m.
of apploxy. Ho had visited our
town and spent months overy
winter for a " number of years and
the people Imd learned to vespoot
and nduire him, as the possessor of
evory charuteristio that went to
make a true and noble man. Regret
was expressed by all, and expressions
of sympathy for the boreovud family
were on overy tongno. Ho loft hero
only a few days beforo lhs death to
canvass his state for Lieutenant
Governor, an offioo that an apprecia
tive constituency anxiously wanted
him to accept. Among the ninViy
other gobd things said on the doath
of Mr. Gardner, the Sentinel-Demo•
crat, of his state, Bays-:
It would take a largo volumn to
roqord the worth and merit of this
good man. Ho -stood, forth as the
leader of tho people, and champion-
pionod everything that wus right.
An honest man, lie was trusted by
his fellow man. Geritlo by nature,
cultured and rofiiied, ho was idolizod
by his family and porsons closely al
lied to him.
He loved books, road and studied
them. Ho was prudent in tho man
agement of business,'and we under
stand leaves considerable property.
He was not a politician in the pop
ular sense, but willing to obey the
calls of hi? friends, hence he yielded
to the demands of tho people, and
served u term iu the«House and two
terms in the Senate, as a rnembor of
the Kentucky Legislature, and mado
an enviable record. His candinaoy
for .Lieutenant Governor was in
obedience to resolutions in two large
conventions in Eustern Kentucky,
and wc boliovod that ho would havo
been nominated and elootod, had ho
lived.
Malicious Mischief.
Some very mischievous porson, or
persons, broke a half dozon street
lamps last Friday night for no othor
reason than mean oussodness. It
must havo boon some, one who had
boon previously arraigned for some
violation of tho town ordnance, aud
tho offender, taking advantage of the
quietude of tho town, and nudoubt
odly nerving himself up to such a
contemptible not by taking on an
overcharge of whiskey, gave vent to
his spleen by damaging the property
of the towu to which he hud doubt
less rightly paid a liberal fine for
misconduot. As a further und
stronger proof that it was some ono
who had deposited in the town treas
ury, tho office sign of the attorney
for tho town council, D. Ware, Jr.,
Esq., disappeared on tho samo night
and its whereabouts havo not yet
been ascertained. A reward of forty
dollars has been offered for the ar
rest of and proof to convict tho guil
ty party, and it is siuccroly hoped
that lie may be ovorlakon and given
his just desert.
