Steam' boats connected that city with the ,citi«8,of the coast, nml steamboat . ownorx grew rich in the business of ,transporting freight and passengers .Gradually the river became shallow, until now no steamboats go to Ma con, and nono but tho smallest go even as far ni. Uawkinsville. The cause of tho river’s becoming shallow was tho cutting down of tho trees along its banks. Tho absonco of .treesand undergrowth permitted the soil to be washed into tho river with .cv<5ry henry rain, iJHing upjtho chan nel, and thus leaving a depth of wa ter scarcely sufficient to float a canoe. Other streams havo shared tho fate of tho Oomulgee. Indeed, many of tho navigable streams in Georgia are rapidly becoming little .more limn shallow crooks. Every year their banks become more bar ren of trees, and 'tho soil of the cul tivated lands tho more easily finds its i*ay intp.l^o channels. The towns .and cjtips on sqoli streams suffer in dury to their commorco boyond re- pair,.hut, nono .of them tako any Rev. T. C. Hoy kin, Sunday School Evangelist, will (I). In order to pro toot the navigable streams and the ,tojvns and cities whose commerce is .mowvor loss, dependent upon thorn, jit might enact > law forbidding ,the cutting dpyvn .of trees upon the •bunks of streams. It might also /iffor a fltnall reward, or bounty, for jovery tree planted upon tho bankB of navigable streams, It ' will cer tainly \>o much cheaper thus to pro toot navigable streams thun it will be satisfactory.
